im saying goodbye to my gen3
lucky and happy to be alive
happend in the middle of the night , lucky me no car was in front of me.
was rear ended by a careless minivan driver who had his whole family with him and was driving exteremly fast while using a cell phone, my car is totalled, got lucky.
was driving on u.s route 95 road work section where speed limit was 45mph but about 5 miles north of me speed was 70mph, driver probably didnt notice the spped change, freeway narrowed to one lane, cones were to the left and right, and he just hit me at a rocket speed, i flew into a trench, my car spinned , rear of car rippled completely and i found myself at other side of freeway at least 100 feet away from accident place facing opposite direction inside a trenchwith all my 4 wheels sank into the grabble.

Holy crap!! Glad the car protected you. From the pix, looks like the crumple zones did their job and the passenger compartment stayed whole. Must have scared the beejesus out of you!

Where on 95? I drive the southern half of that all the time from VA to FL.

Oh, man! I feel your pain. I'm super glad you're OK.

You gave me flashbacks. Sitting at a traffic light, guy plows into us at 60+ mph. Accordioned our car up to the back seats. Knocked us about 150 feet down the road. Responders thought we'd be dead but we walked away on our own legs.

After getting protected that well, we went right out and got another Prius. (y)

I'd recommend the newest and lowest mileage one you can afford, actually. 2017 would be fine, I'm sure. I got this particular Prime because is was available and was the color and trim I wanted.

Yup, they lie. The guy who hit us said he just reached for his phone and saw the light turn yellow and us stop. Sorry, man, but we'd been there for at least a minute and one of the other cars in his cluster stayed to verify our story. They need to start jailing these bozos who think their phones are more important than other people's lives. Besides, gps or phone or stereo or cigarette or people or anything inside your car is secondary to what's in front of your car.

First thing first, glad you are ok and able to walk away from the accident!;)

It’s just me, I would go for a 2017.5 or newer, that’s when they added Toyota Safety Sense in the middle of the model year.
Couple years back while we needed a minivan, we decided on the Sienna, but it was still one year away from the model year 2018 which comes with the TSS-P, so I got my wife an old Honda Odyssey for short term use while we waited. I rather wait out one year than settle for a 2017 without TSS-P. I do want the extra Safety features for my wife and kids.

*Disclaimer: Toyota Safety Sense does not avoid an rear end accident cause by another driver :p

Wow! Glad you survived without hurt! Poor Prius gave itself to protect you! I love driving (particularly my Prius). I have no problems driving in all conditions, come rain, come snow, but my biggest worry is becoming part of someone else's accident!

In this Age of Entitlement everyone (which means just about all drivers) have the same attitude! "I want it NOW!" "I must have it NOW! IMMEDIATELY! WHERE IS IT? I CANNOT WAIT! I MUST HAVE IT RIGHT NOW!"

I would hunt around for a low-mileage, used Prius - new is nice, but it loses ½ its value the moment you drive it off the showroom floor, although warranty on "new" is good (although if the car has a good reputation, why would you agonize about warranty?) Good luck and I hope you find the dream car you're looking for! ' ;)

    Glad you're OK!

    Here's the thing with cars:

You can spend your whole life making "easy" car payments.....or? you can pay YOURSELF first and fund a retirement, then fund things like a house (yes....even in the California!), college and make every car payment HURT to the point where beads of sweat break out on your forehead at the very thought of somebody ripping good money out of your bank account to fund something that will be completely valueless in 10 years.

    Your call.

    Me?
I didn't make that call wisely when I was in my 20's and 30's.....so I HAVE TO do so now while I round out my retirement funds....and you know what?
I don't miss making car payments or grieving over those inevitable first scratches AT ALL .

So....I'd buy as new a Prius as you can afford to BUY.
    Otherwise?

I'd make the loan as short and the payment as big as you think that you can possibly stand - and then add 10-percent, and would unreservedly recommend a G4 Prius (except for the way that they look! ) or a late G3.

    Again...
    Your call.

    Good Luck!
    Stay safe!
