SHANGHAI AUTO SHOW: Lexus plans its first EV for Europe, China push

SHANGHAI — Declaring that a pure electric vehicle is necessary for China and Europe, Lexus International President Yoshihiro Sawa said last week that the luxury brand is working on its first EV.

But exactly what it will be and when it will appear, the Toyota marque is still trying to figure out.

"Definitely here we need an EV in the future," Sawa said last week in an interview at the Shanghai auto show, where Lexus debuted its LM luxury van. "But I cannot say when or how."

China's strict emissions controls and mandates for electric vehicle credits are driving automakers into EVs. And Lexus will also need them in Europe, where certain cities have strict EV requirements, Sawa said. Launch timing will hinge on the course of regulation, he added.

I was shocked by the thread title, thinking Toyota actually has a BEV for outside China, this is good news.
But there isn't even a computer rendering of a car. What type of car hasn't even been decided.
Gives them time to day trade to afford the $34,000 battery.

Whatever they do, I sure hope it is going to look better than the minivan they are thinking to build.

Don't know about that. That grill could suck in a lot of water.
Could it double as a net?

IF they made the grill fold down you could have one great BBQ. Instead of tailgating, front grilling

Which leaves the hypothetical Lexus BEV in the OP still on the drawing board.

C-HR and Lexus UX are basically the same car under the skin and there already were rumors about Toyota filing trademark for UX 300e. It may be closer than we think, but being Lexus it means production will be low and it will be more expensive as electric C-HR would be in Europe.

this begs the question - which wiil come 1st ... a Lexus SUT .... or the Model 'Y'. Lexus fit n finish is great .... while the Y gets supercharging. Decisions decisions.

Just got some more rumours about Lexus UX 300e:
    - 53 kWh battery
    - FWD 204 HP

This will be very limited to Europe only, just enough units to get them to EU mandated CO2 levels.

Despite its extreme popularity in every Market it had been released, Mitsubishi jerked around releasing the Outlander plug-in to the United States for years. I'm sure many, in disgust, decided to take their hard-earned dollars /business elsewhere. Hopefully Toyota has seen the error of Mitsubishi's ways & won't let that happen to them.
