the engine on my 2014 Prius is already smoking and rattling due to a bad head gasket. I found a 2016 Prius 4th Gen Engine 1.8L for $700.
Will it fit? Are both the same engines or will i need to change heads or something major?

I would really appreciate any help .

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

@cnc97 and @Ragingfit have done the swaps;).

So it’s possible, but will require some subtle changes to make it work:).

But doable and a great price(y).

Thank you Raytheeagle for your reply!

I found the threads and It looks interesting , hopefully not an issue for Smog purposes here in Cali.

I noticed that the 4th Gen engines are so much cheaper than the 3rd Gen and unfortunately within the last 3 months my 2015 with 400K miles needed an engine and my 2012 Prius V also threw a rod so I want to find an inexpensive option for the other car with the bad head gasket.

Where in the great state of California are you located?

Up here in the Bay Area, @Joele3 has done the engine swap ;).

And he’s a knowledgeable person in the smog space:).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Hello, Raytheeagle. I am located in the Sacramento region, not too far away. Now with all the resources everyone has been so kind to provide me I am seriously thinking on looking into the swap. I will need to confirm with @Joele3 if there are any Smog issues.

Also semi related to this anyone knows if I was to try K-Seal: Permanent Coolant Leak Repair for the head gasket issue, would it do more damage to the Prius system than fix my issue? Should i make a new thread instead ?

Maxat Hybrid Repair in West Sac is your best bet.

And please, stay far far away from any stop leak product. They can and will cause clogs in the cooling system that can be very difficult to troubleshoot.
