Lane keep assist

I guess I wasn't clear. I was talking about vehicles with LTA, like my Rav4 Hybrid.

 

I just bought 2019 MDX and it's LKAS actually works and keeps the care centered in the lane. Unfortunately it only works above 45MPH (Wish it worked about 25-30). None the less it's a great stress reliever (after you get used to it) on longer drive along with dynamic cruise control (they call ACC).
For my 2017 prime all the technology is there (including nudging the steering wheel). I only wish they would allow us to increase the force so it would be more active (it's not very useful as it is). I know about openpilot but it's several hundred $ and overrides built in system...
Just give more force to steering correction and it would be great.
I drive with that on for Acura and it does a great job.

 

I have Lane Departure Warning with Steering Assist on my 2018 Prius Two and 2018 Prius Four Touring.

For sure, it beeps if I drift over a lane marker.

For sure, none of the 3 drivers in the family have felt ANY "steering assist" at any time. As others have stated, we don't really NEED it, just curious as to why it isn't working as described in the owner's manual.

 

Maybe you are steering back too early. I tested it over the weekend and it brings you back into the lane once you have already crossed the line, basically later than what would feel comfortable, so it's easy to just steer back on your own because it activates. If you just let it do its thing, you'll be bouncing back and forth between the lines… Not sure if that would eventually stop.

I wouldn't think I need it either, but the one time you'll be falling asleep at the wheel or be distracted, it will save you from hitting the ditch.

That depends on how wide the shoulder of the road is. If it's less than 2 feet wide, I would guess it would not save you from hitting the ditch.

I recently rented a 2020 Corolla that has the Lane Tracing Assist I wish my 2017 Prius 4 Touring had. If the lines on the road are even faintly visible, the system on the new Corolla will keep you in the center of the lane. The only issue I had arose when an exit from the highway did not have any lines separating it from the main road, which is most often the case. When it encounters an exit, the system will try to equalize the distance between the center line and the line marking the far edge of the exit, meaning the car will veer to the right. To my way of thinking, the solution would seem to be simply for highways departments to change the solid line that marks the edge of the road to a dotted line to denote an exit. I believe I have seen highway markings like that in some locations. The other "issue" is that the system will beep and stop providing steering assist if you take your hands off the wheel for more than a few seconds, but that is probably for the best, given the current state of automated driving technology.

 

While test driving, I got to feel the Prime LKAS, RAV4 LTA, and the Kia Niro LKAS. The Niro is a more significant nudge that you somewhat reliably trust it to follow the curve of the lane. The RAV4 LTA keeps you centered in the lane really well, but nags constantly. The Prime LKAS is.... like a gentle bump that only works 15% of the time. The rest of the time, it's beeping at you for crossing the lane.

Using OpenPilot on the Prime really gave me the best experience out of all of them. I keep it engaged even when manually steering because it does small corrections on the curve of the lane for me.
