I recently inherited a 2006 with 145,000 and it appears I need a new battery. I got the POA80 first about a week ago and using Techstream cleared the alarm and had been monitoring the battery actually before the first alarm but also immediately after (continued normal [light] usage.) After about a week of contemplating things (and after cleaning the cooling fan which wasn't too bad) I started getting more of the POA80 but then also P3021 (battery block 11 becomes weak.) That sold me on the new battery right now but I decided to continue driving it (while monitoring temps and so forth.) Well... after about 60 mi. of further usage the battery stopped taking charge (as indicated by the dash monitoring system,) stopped supplying charge but then also began to increase the vehicle's speed without my input (I'm not certain if I noticed the monitoring system before speeding up or vice versa.) Anyway... I may also need the 12v battery but I understand it was replaced not long ago. So I'm wondering if the vehicle speeding up on it's own might sound familiar to someone?

BTW... while monitoring w/Techstream it all appears within bounds to me... (I was unable to upload .tse data file so I changed it to one that needs correction.)

Dying hybrid battery making the car speed up. That’s a first.

    test the 12v

is the engine starting? takes a 'working' hybrid battery to perform that function

no, don't recall anyone reporting the car 'speeding up' on it's own. can you give us a more detailed description of the event?

You should stop trying to find answers to why you're still driving on a failed battery. All you need is a new battery and the problems will all go away.

The car starts yes but I haven't yet tested the 12v cause at this moment I don't know how :) I've heard of a function that loads on the dash but haven't gone beyond that.

what happened was I drove to a friends about 60 mi. away and on the return trip I noticed from the dash monitor the battery wasn't registering any activity and then it seems at that time it started speeding up. I don't recall everything in exact sequence (and it may have been the speed up preceded my noticing the battery state) because I was confused by it but the car did start accelerating with my foot off the pedal. All in a very short period the car lost power (I began up hill,) I pulled over, turned off the car to reset, waited a while, turned the car back on and things were reset aside from the indicating alarm lights caused by the POA80 (which I was running with.)

I cleaned the cooling fan after the first DTC and had been monitoring it with Techstream to see the impact. The battery failed fast and unfortunately while I was some distance from home (60 mi.) I am concerned I created more damage but don't know exactly where to begin. It's currently parked awaiting the battery I'll be ordering monday from "best hybrid batteries." I plan to do the 12v test and that seems to be something I can run from the dash engine monitor?

there are directions here for the 12v dash monitoring. try googling and look for priuschat hits.

or, if you are diy, it might be worth investing $20. in a volt meter. or you can have an auto parts store load test it for free.

do you know how old it is?

Thanks... I located the directions for the accessing the hidden service menu and have access to a Fluke so I should be able to do this without problem. I'm thinking the ECU was affected by something during my strange ride when it sped up on it's own?
I understood the 12v was replaced but I'll have to find out how long ago that was.

EDIT: I've just read the 12v is only used to boot the electrical systems before starting. Once the ready light comes on the the HV battery is supplying everything and the 12v could littely be removed without effect?
What exactly is the 12V battery used for? | PriusChat

Yeah, move on to more historically weighty questions like: "why do I exist?"

From the hidden service menu test the battery showed 12.3v and after applying power the battery dropped to 11.5v then rose to 11.7v where it seemed to stay. So.. the 12v might be ok?

The other DTC I see is P3000-battery control system and it seems this could be faulted by the HV Battery?

might be is correct. you're definitely at the low end. but i wouldn't change it unless you're committed to a new hybrid battery.
you could try a trickle charge, and see if it holds any higher

not sure on the doc, but there are plenty of threads here covering it. you can also find a service manual with troubleshooting if you search the net.

I might as well get a new one. Any recommendations? OEM or 3rd party?

P3000 basically seems to imply HV Battery or ECU issues...

best = oem. they won't ship, so call around for best price in driving distance. should be around 2k.

next is new aftermarket. see our member @2k1Toaster $1,600.

    worst is any rebuilt

I purchased from "best hybrid battery" https://www.besthybridbatteries.com/ (earlier today) because I couldn't find an OEM but the 12v is still on the list... I've read somewhere a 3rd party whose name contains "Green" supplies good 12v?

That’s not normal. When the car is in ready mode the voltage should be close to 14 volts. Regarding you battery not charging and speeding up did you happen to be traveling downhill at the time? Perhaps with your foot on the brake?
