How long does a factory order take?

We live in the Boston area, where only the AWD-e models seem to be available (and AWD-e-only seems to be a north thing in general, from what I've seen looking at dealer websites). We don't want an AWD-e. In particular we want a non-AWD XLE with the moonroof option.

So I'm guessing (?) that we may need to have the dealer place a factory order (even assuming they can swing some sort of trade or whatever with a dealer in the south, I'm imagining that having an XLE having both the colors we want and the moonroof is going to be a tough find). So what would be the lead time on something like that? Months?

(Also, in recent years has Toyota ramped down the number of Priuses they are making? I've checked the online inventory at lots and lots of dealers in eastern MA, RI, and southern NH and everyone seems to be listing only 2-5 Priuses while having zillions of other cars -- even obviously popular ones like Camrys. Now to be fair, our existing Prius is a 2004, so it's not like I've been following trends.)

Curious, why wouldn't you want the AWD option? Come winter, I would want to have that feature.

In general, if a dealer is willing to place an order, and it can’t be fulfilled by redirecting a vehicle already scheduled for production, it would probably follow Toyota’s Ordering Schedule for Production Orders: delivery in October for an order placed by June 11. The last order date for the MY19 Prius was May 10, however.

So that means they can't place an order for a MY19 Prius at all? It does seem odd that they list the order window as Oct 1, 2018 to May 10, 2019 given that IIRC the car wasn't even officially made available until late-Jan/early-Feb 2019. But que sera sera, I guess. And thanks.

In 15 years we haven't had the need for it with our 2004 Prius. So (a) I don't want to pay for it, (b) it's something else that can go wrong, and (c) I'd rather have the extra 3 cubic feet of cargo room the non-AWD XLE has vs the AWD-e XLE.

I'm also still curious about the other piece of my question -- are Prius inventories around here so low because people are snapping them up like hotcakes? Or has interest in them died way back over the years? I'm literally seeing ratios of 15:1 to 25:1 on lot availability of Camrys to Priuses around here. Or is that just how it's been for a while?

For my region (centered on zip code 98101), inventory today is showing 63 Prii:

It is the Primes that are really short, just 2 units left.

I’ve just placed an order for a 2019 Prius. Been quoted 16 weeks delivery (early Sept). That’s in the UK.

My son’s salesman is also fleet sales so he ordered his 2015 Prius v as a fleet of 1 with the factory installed remote start package. I recall it taking a couple of months at that time.

prius sales have been falling steadily for a few years as people migrate to plug ins, suv's and cuv's, and hybrid competition from several other manufacturers grows.

the ben 4 styling has polarized buyers, and the new rav4h has taken prius customers as well.

as such, toyota and their dealers don't want a ton of inventory rusting on the lots. plus, finding the particular model and color you want makes it particularly more difficult.

Watching a local dealership off-and-on over several months, I've never seen a base model Prius 2019, the only level with a spare tire up here. It's usually a mix of Primes and Prius, the Prius being mostly AWD, some "Tech". Usually about 3~4 Prius, 4~5 Primes. They're at a low ebb at the moment:

Do what I do and look further away. My preferred dealer is 150 miles away.
My local one cannot be trusted. The last vehicle I bough from them was my 2000 Tundra. They were supposed to order one. They ended up driving one almost 500 miles from another dealer & then swapping parts with another vehicle to get close to what we wanted. The truck is still hanging in there, though.

Purely window shopping. Waiting on 2021~2022, will see if they "come to their senses". Not holding out much hope though...

That shows the difference between North American vs UK-Aussie model year designations. That 2019 you receive will be a 2020 under our labeling system.

Early September could go either way, depending on Toyota's whim
I got an early 2017 in October 2016.

No, my answer was specific to 2019 vs 2020 Primes. Other posts clearly indicate that the 2019 Prime (North American designation) is essentially done already. 2020 Primes have been open for orders since March 1, and will be arriving during the summer.

Seamaster's Prime will be a 2019 because of the UK's different model year designation system, but would definitely be a 2020 here.

there has been a shortage in the Twin Cities as well. I have only seen one awd LE model. No XLE models at all in awd or fwd options. I am curious as others about the OP not being interested in the AWD option being in a snowy state like MA. It's not an expensive option, but I think you lose the moonroof option, is that correct?

@stephensprius We are the original owners on our 2004 Prius and it’s been in the Boston area the whole time. We’ve never really felt a need for AWD.

Having the plain XLE saves $1000 over the AWD plus gives us an extra 3 cubic feet of cargo space. And it gives us the moonroof option which would still result in a car cheaper than an XLE AWD.

But based on what people are saying, the moonroof thing is probably dead since orders appear to be closed now. And to even get a plain XLE it looks like we’d have to travel a ways south and buy it from some dealership down there.

I started looking for a 2019 Prius with HD Radio and a moonroof in February, and ended up where you are, not finding it. In the end I bought a new 2018 four from a lot a few miles out of the exurbs. It has everything - saved thousands! But yeah, lots are not getting many Limiteds, or any non eAWD XLEs here in KC.

Ah, that makes sense. Maybe worth it. I really love having a moonroof, I know it's fairly rare on a Prius.
