    Hello,

I have a question about HV mode for my 2019 Prime.

When in HV mode (say, on a highway), I can find my mpg on the main screen by pushing the "trip" button successively until this reading appears. However, any time I stop for a break and turn the car off , the mpg reading resets to zero. Is there any way to obtain the average mpg for the entire trip even though stops have been made along the way?

Two presses up from HSD screen shows mpg for day or month.

    Welcome to Prius Chat (y).

Have you tried trip A or Trip B. You could also do what @CraigCSJ suggests and measure per day too;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, I am a new owner and am not yet familiar with all the acronyms. Can you tell me what HSD is?

2 helpful ideas above.(y) Trip A and B can be reset by holding down on the trip button. What you are using, I call trip "C". It only shows miles and mpg's from car power on to car power off.

Thanks. Not sure my last reply got posted (I am new at this). Also I'm a new owner and not familiar with all the acronyms. Not sure how to get to the HSD screen. Is it related to the ECO-diary?

Yap, Trip A or Trip B are the best way to monitor HV portion of mpg. Just remember to reset Trip button to zero when you start HV. Remember that if you have any traction battery charge left in your battery, after the start-up the car will default in EV mode, and any EV drive miles will be included into the average mpg displayed. If you strictly want HV portion of mpg, switch to HV as soon as you turn on the car to Ready.

I received following PM from the OP @CEJ . Can someone answer his question about not being able to post a reply on this thread. Maybe @Tideland Prius can help.

Yap, Eco Diary is what @CraigCSJ is suggesting to use. Daily mpg average will give you some estimation of your drive, again if you did all in HV. If you had any EV drive on that day, average mpg will be higher than HV alone.

Not sure what is HSD, but I think he means Hybrid System Indicator on the Multi Information Display. Two up on the right side wheel button will show you Eco-Diary.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I implemented them and they work fine! Special thanks to SK for helping to get my postings to appear.

I do have another question relating to mpg: If, for example, I zero trip A and then drive part of the time in EV mode and part of the time in HV mode, what is the meaning of the displayed mpg in this case? I believe it means this: it is the total distance travelled (including both modes) divided by the gallons of gas used. This number is fairly meaningless because if fails to account at all for the kwh of energy used. For that reason, the number is pretty high especially if the distance travelled on the in EV is a substantial portion of the total distance.

    Does this make sense?

Yap, you got it. The mpg displayed on PRIME with both EV and HV are totally meaningless. There are many PRIME owners who rarely use gas and do most driving on EV, thus having 199.9 mpg (for 2017 model) or 999.9 mpg (for 2018 and up) pegged on display. For this reason, I have actually run a full tank of gas without charging, (i.e. No EV mode for a full tank) to get accurate HV only mpg from time to time, like after changing tires.

Hey, thanks again SK. You really know your stuff! Your answers are better and clearer than what I get from my salesman, dealership or Toyota Customer Service. Hope I can come knocking again to you with other questions. Do I need to start a new thread to change the subject?

LOL, I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or not. After purchasing my first hybrid car 7 years ago, I quickly learned that most dealer sales person have almost zero knowledge of cars they are selling when it comes to hybrid or plug-ins. There are many, many other contributors here who are seasoned Prius owners with far more in depth knowledge of the subject than I am. I am still learning new things about my own car everyday coming here.

As for starting a new thread, it will help others to chime in if you have vastly different topic. Or You can use search function of the forum to find and tag onto the preexisting thread on the topic of your interest. That being said, many threads here tend to become derailed to off topic subject often enough. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

DEFINITELY, a compliment, SK! We bought our first Prius in the fall of 2013 and have had a total of 5. The Prime, which we bought only recently is our first plug-in, and is, of course, a whole different animal. I agree with your assessment of the quality of help you can get from the dealership, even though they are supposed to be trained. When you call TCS, they essentially read from the owner's manual, unless you push them to ask one of their technical consultants (which sometimes helps).

Now that I have your attention, I will slip in another (admittedly off-thread) question concerning climate control. Suppose Auto, AC, and recirculate are all turned off but the fan is turned on. My understanding is that you will get ambient (outside) air unless the temperature drops below the set temperature at which time heat will come on. Of course, you will never get air conditioning--no matter how hot it gets--because AC is turned off. Does this sound correct?

That sounds correct. I usually have my climate control on AUTO, and the only thing I change is to on-off or change the temp setting. I don't like the touch screen 11.6 inch display on my PRIME, and I have the screen display off most of the time. I can change the temp on MID using the wheel button. And I can shut off and turn on the climate control with voice command, (that is if it listens to me correctly for voice recognition system is very error-prone.)

Thanks for the info, SK. I have been driving for a couple of days in HV mode exclusively just to experience it and see what the mpg is. I am getting mid to high 70's for the mpg sometimes 80 or higher. This kind of seems absurdly high. Has anyone else experienced this?

For how long of distance and how fast were you driving? For a short distance less than 10 miles, I have had over 100 mpg with HV, but for the longer distance it always averages out. Mid 60 mpg is easily obtainable for the duration of a full tank drive but 70 and 80 mpg takes much more patience. I have never got that high for long distance, but I have seen here someone doing that regularly. At highway speed above 70mph, my mileage drops to mid 50 mpg during summer.
