30000 Miles and now time to move on to Outlander PHEV

    I have been happy Prius PHV driver for more than two years. We clocked around 30.000 miles, no technical problems = 100 % reliabiliy. Avarage consumption was 3.5 l/100 km = 67 MPG. Best month was 2.4 l/100 km = 98 MPG and worst 4.4 l/100 km = 53 MPG.

    Our driving is typically inside City of Helsinki. Occasionally we longer trips to our relatives 300 miles away. So we are a family who is really optimal for plug-in hybrid. I would say that up to 70-80 % daily driving is pure electric.

    However we needed a bigger car for our use and I decided to take another plug-in from Japan = Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Sport edition. Unfortunately Toyota did not have RAV4 plug-in or EV (yet) available.

    My dealer represents both so it was easy deal and I am looking forward Toyota’s vehicles 2021-2022 when I will change my car next time.

    Outlander arrived few days ago and I thought I will share my last Prius picture (as of now) and some comparison,

    Range is very similar - Outlander has bigger battery 13.8 kW and I can comfortably say that you can reach 28-30 EV Miles quite easily. My first impression is that Outlander real life range is few miles more than in Prius PHV.

    Anyway we had 2+ great years with Prius PHV which was my third Prius. My first one was Prius second gen 2008 and second Prius Fourth gen 2016. And let’s see when is time four fourth

    (Presumably those numbers are in US gallons rather than UK gallons?)

    I wasn’t aware that Toyota made a PHEV Highlander. Cool! Perhaps they just don’t sell it in the US market (or I’m just behind the times). I’d seen the non-plug-in hybrid version, but not the plug-in version.

    Anyway, let us know how you like it, including how much your EV-mode range goes down in the arctic winter.

    Outlander (by Mitsubishi), not Highlander :)

    I don’t think they get the Highlander, do they? Probably goes straight to a LC Prado from a RAV4.

    Just checked. Nope. They go from RAV4 straight to Land Cruiser. Nothing in between

    yes unfortunately Toyota is not making any other plug-in than Prius PHV/Prime currently..looking forward for results from their new EV-strategy 2021-2022. But in the meantime I decided to take another brand.

    Have been driven 300 miles now with Outlander..have to say that the powertrain is fantastic..obviously Prius takes less gasoline when in long distance hybrid mode, but my first long test drive starting from full batter was around 150 miles with 80 % of that motorway = +75 mph my average consumption was around 40 mpg with my Prius I could have done around 50-52 mpg.

    Biggest difference for Prius is that Outlander Powertrain works totally different..it works most of the time like the powertrain in BMW i3rex. And since it has two very powerful electric motors the feeling of pure electric drive is much stronger (obviously it is not really a fast car, but last time I had 4wheeler it was Land Cruiser Prado, so this is much faster).

    And since we needed a bigger vehicle - I am really happy about the choice so far.

    Keep us updated of your progress with your Outlander PHEV!

    That was my first choice originally back in 2013 but it never made it to Canada until late 2017-18 then my wife got a 2016 Lexus NX200t. Now she is in love with Lexus and no such PHEV/BEV yet so recently we just got a 2020 NX300h (interim solution) for now until the next UX300e is available by 2021-22. Once driven a PHEV/BEV, can't go back for quiet/fast kick start/MPG. Toyota/Lexus is too conservative/slow moving to PHEV/BEV for some reason.

    The new 2019 RAV4 hybrid eAWD uses the motors to spin up the AWD system, it is a much faster kick/feel like you are feeling now (those motors do the magic trick somehow). But your Outlander has the Super All Wheel Control!! I missed my EVO time for sure but as we are getting older we need to slow down and do better with MPG :D

    I believe the Prius AWD-e does the same thing but it never made it to the Prime. It is nice to have AWD in the winter time for some MPG loss.
