I recently purchased a new-to-me 2017 Prius. I love almost everything about the car, but the navigation system is a PITA. If I detour off a set route, the system doesn't recalculate for the best route, it tries to get me back on the original route. I tried stopping navigation and selecting the destination again, but it still kept trying to take me out of my way to the old route. Could there be something in the settings that will fix this issue?

Maybe the previous owner had some settings to avoid certain places or avoid toll roads.

Best to reset the nav back to factory settings (but you’ll have to reconnect your phone and set up your radio presets again).

Not that I have found. The NAV on Gen 4 and Prime is about 10 years behind the times. Mine will ignore a paved 2 lane road and insist I double back to a much longer paved 2 lane road.

mine will do that in the short term "turn-around" and resume original route. But before too long it realizes that I am going forward and offers a new route. Patience?

I volunteer for the Red Cross and use my phone for navigation when I drive their vans. It certainly finds the addresses, but I miss the easy touchscreen availability of my Prius. Also when setting up a route of several stops - the Prius makes it so easy to do.
So, maybe I am an outlier - but I prefer the Prius NAV to iPhone map apps.

Have you tried the various Detour Options found on Page 235 of the Navigation System Manual?

I have an Apple "Mirroring" hack on my Prius. So I can already use my phone in my car and see the directions on the screen. Still prefer the Toyota NAV.

It seems those who are most critical of the Toyota Nav system are the same people who have never read the manual.

I don't claim to have read the whole thing either;), but I do have the PDF files on my computer, and can usually find what I'm looking for with a quick text search.

    I have. Both Gen 3 and Gen 4 (7”) and Prime (11.6”).

You are human. You learn it’s quirks. If you’re the type of person that goes “well it should be this way” and doesn’t adapt, well then obviously it’s not for you.

I enjoy using the built in features of any car I own so I learn to adapt to maximise its functionality.

I had a 2017 Murano as a rental last year. I went back and forth between Nissan nav and CarPlay. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and I used one or the other depending on the situation. This way, I enjoyed the car rather than be frustrated with its system and insist on CarPlay all the time (or vice versa). I realise not everyone is like me but if you have the personality that adapts quickly to new or different things, you’ll enjoy what life has to offer.

My experience with a Prime (I believe same NAV system) - it's not a good system. I have a 20 mile drive to my daughter's house, and if I take the back roads (all paved, 2 lane, etc), it stubbornly tries to re-route me to an alternate route for about 5 miles, then when I get on a connector road it figures it out. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it ignored the direct 2-lane paved road that was 15 miles to my destination, and tried to route me 50 miles via alternate paved roads.

When I travel, I generally have Google Maps for that area downloaded on my phone, and that almost always routes me properly.

My Prime has one of the lamest NAV systems I have ever seen on a car. Pathetic at best.

that's the nice thing about phone apps and handheld gps devices. no 700 page manual needed to get you to your destination on time.

I have a 2017 Prius. I had the same problem as the original poster. When I went for a scheduled maintenance, I told them of the problems I had with the navigation system and asked the service department to check for any updates for the navigation system. There was!! They installed the update, at no charge. I do not have that problem any more.
