I saw a few threads about various trailer hitch issues. I'm hoping that for 2020 Prius Prime, a hitch is possible. I just want to put a bike rack on, nothing heavy. Some hitch sites state that they'll install on a 2019, I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on the 2020 possibilities. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge, the 2020 is mechanically identical to the 2019. The 2019 got some interior changes.

I have a Torklift Ecohitch 2 inch. It's great, and I'm a big fan of a 2 inch hitch for a bike rack, especially if you want to carry more than 2 bikes or use a heavy rack.

Do you have a handy photo of this installed? How much does it change the rear ground clearance?

It's tucked close to the bumper. The only thing I've ever hit it on was some landscape edging near a curb when backing into a parking space. It clears most curbs when backing in.

It looks like there's about 4 inches from the bottom of the hitch to a standard curb.

Do you have a model number of the hitch? The suppliers in my area say their distributors can't get a hitch for my 2020 prime yet but I keep telling them it's the same as the 2019.

I am on my third Curt trailer hitch on my third Prius. They have always be great. Order line and have installed locally if no dealer around. U-Hauls are ugly and I hate the free big sticker advertising they do.

What is the allowed trailer weight for the Prius in the USA?

    Zero.

Toyota owner's manuals even have warnings against installing a hitch for accessories like bike racks.

Here in Europe it is 725kg (1600lbs) for the Prius IV and 750kg (1650lbs) for the Corolla hybrid.
    The RAV4 hybrid in 2WD trim 800kg (1760lbs) and the AWD version 1650kg (3630lbs).

I would buy one just like @m8547, I would personally use it for things like:

    1) Bike carrier

    2) Luggage carrier

    3) Very light duty trailering using something like a Harbor Freight ~250 lbs trailer.

Doesn't the trailer require its own brakes over 500kg there?

Trailer regulations between US and Europe are very different.

I bought this one: Torklift Central | 2017-2018 Toyota Prius Prime Stealth EcoHitch
It's not cheap, but I still think a 2 inch hitch is totally worth it. I use it for a bike rack, and it's rock solid.

Above 750kg if I am correct, I will check this. There are loads of 750kg trailers around which have no brakes.
The Corolla however is only allowed to tow 450kg when the trailer has no brakes. Cars always have two tow weights here, with and without brakes.

That bumper is not Prius Prime. Its a regular Prius. The Prime receiver does not extend that far beyond the bumper.

I had looked into the Sonic/Aveo rating at one time, and noticed several cars had 500kg as the non-brake to brake cut off.

Well, that is a photo of my car, which is a Prius Prime (as far as I know). I can take more photos if it helps. There's another one here. Prime in the wild. | Page 19 | PriusChat
