$500 Parts Prius P0301-Possibly Rings

    First of all thanks to everybody that helped me on my previous thread.

    I just picked up a 2009 parts prius for $500. I got this because I wanted another battery and some extra parts for my current Prius.

    Anyways this car is in surprisingly good body shape for the upper midwest. The previous owner said that the reason she was selling it was because the dealer mechanic said that the P0301was due to failing piston ring(s). It would make sense the car has 280k on it. She said the car needed an extra quart between changes, half a quart at about 2500 miles or so.

    I drove it 20 miles home at highway speeds the whole time and the car ran great. It got 44 mpg with the AC blasting. There weren't any vibrations or shimmys.

    I have never pushed one of these engines all that far and neither has anybody I know. How much have people gotten out of engines like this in the past when they are at this level of wear?

    I know this is a very subjective question, but any input on this would really be appreciated. I'm deciding whether to harvest parts or register it.

    Wow, you found a smokin' deal. (a little oil burning humor there) One quart between oil changes? WTH? I'm trying to think of a car I've ever had that didn't require that. Toyota spec is a quart every 600. That mechanic put the screws to her. There is no EGR circuit on the Gen 2 like there is on the Gen 3.

    Throw some plugs in it, do some basic checks, fluid swaps and carry on. See where it leads.

    Definitely purchase techstream so you can go online with the car go proper troubleshooting and health checks. That car probably has a lot of life left in it.

    I've had two 2005s with over 280k miles. Both were running great with about the same oil burn rate that you describe. Never had any problems with them. I gave one to my son and he averaged 40-44 mpg because he did a LOT of 5 minute trips to work. I used the other one for driving 27 minutes each way to work and was consistently 48-52mpg. The first one, we sold to one of his lifelong friends and it's still going strong. I asked her to bring it to me monthly for a check up, so I get to keep a good eye on it. My son now has another 2005 @ about 195-200k and it's a beast. The other one was run off the road and totaled. Now I have my 2007, purchased 2 years ago @143k with a failed HV battery. Now at about 188k. Running like a champ.

    There was a short period were 4th gen people were coming here saying it was fine for E85 gasoline put in gen 3s. The manual said no more than e10 and so did the gas cap, they literally argued with me til I uploaded a screenshot of the manual and gas cap. Glad those days are behind.

    Yes it does. One person uploaded their manual for me to prove that the Prius was designed for E85 also. So that prompted me to ask, is the manual from a 3rd? They said it was for the 4th. After uploading the e10 fuel requirements and gas cap from my manual, That’s when I knew there wasn’t enough red wine in the world to drink back my time lost replying to entire conversation muahaha.

    so....maybe more red wine is necessary, but this is what I find in the 4th gen owners manuals online at the Toyota Owner's site
