Can battery fan speed be customized?

I think this can be done with Hybrid Assistant.

It's shown as a setting. Not sure if it works, I haven't tried it yet.

On a side note, is there a similar setting for TPMS ?

I would REALLY like to increase the rear threshold value, currently I believe it has a "upper" widow of 20% or 7 PSI. So when it hits ~42 PSI the warning dash light goes off. I like my rear tires at ~40 PSI, on hotter days this will unfortunately trip the TPMS system.

Can TPMS be adjusted higher ?

I think the car has a built in TPMS reset. Set the tire pressure how you want, then reset it in the menu. That tells the car the current setting is "normal" and I guess it has some tolerance around that. I've never tried it, and I've never seen the TPMS light even when it was delivered from the factory with super high tire pressure (I think close to 50).

 

I think this is how it works on my Camry. Though the display maxes out at 55psi, and it reads high to begin with, so I have to lower tire pressures, reset, drive around until it sets, and then readjust.

 

It has a display? Why don't we have a display for tire pressure?


I tested the fan speed setting in hybrid assistant today, and I don't think it did anything. I set it for 35C, and the battery was 100F, and I didn't notice any different fan noise. It says it sets fans to full speed, which would be quite loud.

I also got the battery quite hot yesterday. I was doing some uneconomical driving in frustrating traffic, plus a long B mode deceleration off the highway. All that after charging and parking in the sun. The battery hit 107, and I could hear the fans coming on around 25mph and get louder with increasing speed. Usually they are inaudible if the battery is cold and barely audible between 45-65mph if the battery is hot, somewhere over 90.

 

All these features add to the cost of the car. A good tire pressure gauge is $5.

 

No , the fan setting don't work with the Prius Prime , on HA blog it's clearly stated that it's not supported because it can't be implemented in a safe way. If you have noticed there is no FAN indicator when used on a Prius Prime. When HA is used on a Prius Prime the battery icon turn yellow when the fans start spinning ..that's the only hint you can have when using HA on a Prime.

BUT ...

you can download Dr. Prius / Dr. Hybrid , and if you go in the special functions screen , there is a slider to adjust the desired temperature , if you pick 35 Celsius the fans will start to spin accordingly to keep it at or under 35C. That's the only way I've found to force the fans on a Prius Prime. The setting only work when the App is active ... it will not stay if you turn off the car .

It's software, and they clearly already have the capability.

Checking tires with a gauge takes time. The TPMS system is already there checking the pressure continuously. If it was a display I could check frequently. As it is now I check every few months, and most people probably don't check until the light comes on, which is too late in my opinion.

 

i totally agree with you , when the yellow light turn on , it's too late and the pressure is very low ...

two options :
1- you deliberately over inflate your tires , then you reset the TPMS setting in your car , then you deflate your tires at the desired pressure , this will trick the computer and make the low pressure threshold higher ,, so the light will turn on at 30 PSI instead of 20 ....

2- Or you buy a aftermarket TPMS ... i got this one and it work well except it's off by 1 PSI : when 35 PSI is displayed on the device is 36 PSI in the tire. it's the BAR system by default but you can change it in PSI

Fair point and the few lines of code wouldn't add cost. On some cars when you add air to the tires, the horn beeps when you get to the recommended pressure. That's a nice feature.

I still like my gage, though. Works on all tires including a spare if you have one, on snows were I don't run TPMS, and on my non-TPMS car. Plus when you are face to face with the tire you can inspect it while checking air pressure.

Opinion -TPMS further allows people to ignore their car. As you noted, most just wait for a dash warning.

 

Sorry for diverging from the OP's question on the fan speed control which I have not played with, so no suggestion, but for TPMS question.

My Prime does not trigger TPMS warning lights at 42 psi on any tires. This is with the onboard TPMS is set at factory default recommended pressure, even though I have my tire pressure always kept at 38 psi front and rear. I have aftermarket exterior TPMS on my tire set to monitor the realtime tire pressure on them. On hotter days, after miles of drive, the tire pressure goes above 42 all the times, but the dash TPMS light has never come on. Did you reset your TPMS at lower psi? I am sure if you reset TPMS at 40 psi, it will not trigger the warning at 42 psi. My aftermarket TPMS is set by default to warm at 46 psi which can be customized.

 

Because the Prius isn't a sports car. To get it on the last gen Camry I have, meant choosing the SE.

Meh, the Camry's display is around 5 to 7 psi higher than my dial gauges. Maybe it has the same adjustment as the MPG display. It's more convenient than the warning light that doesn't tell you which tire is the offending one, but that could be done without inaccurate gauges

TPMS is around because people were just looking at the tire, which if it looks low with modern ones, is beyond very low, if they were even looking at their tires.

 

And with RFTs, even empty they'll look fine.

 

Are you saying Camry's tire pressure display on the dash is 5-7 psi higher than manually read pressure on purpose? Or are you saying TPMS in Camry is inaccurate by 5-7 psi? Either way, 5-7 psi seems way too much error. Last time I checked on my PRIME when I changed the tire, the car's internal TPMS value (read trough OBDII), aftermarket external TPMS value, and manually measured by digital gauge were all within +/- 1psi.

 

What's a good ODB app for reading tire pressure?

 

Yeah, the car's display was that much higher than the hand gauge I used when filling the tires. That gauge could be wrong, but it was in reasonable agreement with other gauges I have. I don't have a way of querying the TPMS sensors to see what they are reporting to the car.
