When I first got the car, I'm pretty sure the little DRL LEDs would come on during the day. Now it looks like the DRLs stay off and the headlights are on all the time, even during the day. I have the headlight stalk set to "auto"? I like the look of the DRLs, actually wish the strip was longer and brighter, that's a (small) part of why I got an Advanced model.

Maybe a switch problem? Nightime sensor? Does your main screen stay in daylight mode, or dark? That should give a hint as to what is wrong.

Mine works the way it should.

Have you made any other vehicle settings changes? There is an option in Carista, for example, to default to DRL off.

My 11" screen changes from night to day as appropriate. Where is the Nightime sensor? I'm thinking maybe needs to get cleaned.

I have made vehicle settings changes. I'll double check in Carista, that would not be something I'd change on purpose. Are there other basic settings for lights in MFD or 11" screen that I should look at?

    On the dash.

This is the screen from the Carista app:

Isn’t the low beams at reduced intensity the DRLs? (At least in Canada, that’s how the DRLs are set up) The clearance lights don’t come on for me unless the headlights are on (automatically or manually) or I rotate the switch to parking/taillight mode.

you may be right about this, found a post with a picture that sums it up pretty well: Head light/Day time running light don't turn on | Page 2 | PriusChat

This brings up another question that I had but keep forgetting to ask. If I leave the lights in "on" position, will the lights automatically turn off? We get fog for half the year, so I just leave the lights in "on" for that part of the year and don't touch the stalk. In my scion, lexus, and hyundai vehicles they would turn off automatically. Friend has a camry and he said it turns off automatically too. But I know Prius can be all weird on these things.

Yes they do. I takes about 30 seconds. I believe the time can be adjusted with Carista.

Yes, at least for the 2020 Prime, U.S. too::

This is not true on my midcycle-refreshed U.S. Gen3, in which the DRLs (LED) are separate from the headlights (halogen). I believe the equivalent Canadian units did have DRLs as reduced-intensity headlights.

Yes, we had high beams at reduced intensity for all of the Gen 3’s life.

This is how we can identify a US import - the DRLs are LEDs on PiPs or Gen 3.5.

It can be changed just through the settings menu of the car. At least on the Camry.

Depends. On some cars, they are the LED 'eyebrows', which could only be on higher trims.

Page 738 of the Owners Manual. You can adjust the automatic headlight off timer to 0, 30, 60, and 90 seconds through the Navigation screen. Currently it defaults to 30 seconds.

You talking about the 2013-2015 Prius Five? I thought they were just parking lights. Hmm ok.

    My Gen 3 didn't have DRL's. (2010 5)

The U.S. DRLs started with the 2012 mid-cycle refresh. My 2012 has 'em, my 2010 didn't.

No, in general. I see those lights on during the day on various car models without the parking lights on. Last gen Camries of the higher trim had them mounted in with the front turn signal. I can't say if they came on in addition to the DRL headlight or not, but some models I've seen with just the LED light on.
The US gen3 may not have gotten them until 2012. DRLs were mandated in Canada before then. I'm assuming my 2004 Matrix was a Canadian import, because it didn't have a way to turn the DRLs off.

I wouldn't use that as an indicator of being a Canadian import. It seems that most U.S.-market cars with DRLs over the years, don't have a way to turn them off. My U.S.-market Subaru doesn't. The Prius seems like an outlier on this.

Ohh. Yeah. But we were talking about the Gen 3, that’s why I was confused.

Yes. The last gen Camry with the midlife update (2015-2017) had LED DRLs on XLE and XSE trims in the bumper as you mentioned. They did come on with the headlights.

There’s a similar distinction with the current Camry - XSE and XLE models have the “3 L” or hockey stick LED DRLs in the headlight housing. L/LE/SE use the high beams. There’s a similar difference in the rear taillights too.

They can be turned off on the 2016 Camry, and set to not come on when the lights are are on the auto position.
Our 2006 HHR and 2013 Sonic could turn off the auto setting, and thus the DRLs, but it was momentary switch, and had to be done each time the car was started. There was instructions for removing the spring so it stayed in the off position on the web.

I might have also thought the Matrix was an import because the 2005 Prius didn't have DRLs.

What year did they become mandatory in Canada?
