Based on my past experiences with uncommonly needed parts at my dealer, most anything you need is probably at a local warehouse and available in a day or two. Really unusual stuff would be up to a week. I'd expect a battery to be in the uncommon, but not really unusual realm. That's assuming you're in or near a metro area. An isolated dealer out in the boondocks might take a little longer.

Last I checked (probably 4-6 months ago) it was $1650 OEM with a very expensive core charge.

    The math is getting... interesting.

A brand-new battery includes a "core", right? So if a brand new battery is $1650 and the value of a core is $1350, that means the set of modules themselves only has a value of $300?

Right. So if you give the dealer $3000, you have in hand a battery and 2 cores (assuming you haven't yet returned the dead one). The value of a core is $1350, and you have two. The value of two cores is $2700 ($1350*2). I still maintain the value of the modules themselves is $300.

    Nope ;).

You have $3k. You have a bad pack. You need the new modules otherwise the Prius doesn’t run. You also need to package the old modules and hardware correctly otherwise they keep the $1350:cool:.

Still $1650 for the new modules or about $60 a module (y).

We're both arguing the same side of the coin, Ray! I'm *not* saying you can *buy* a set of modules for $300. And I realize the core charge includes a set of bad modules. But what is the value of a bad module? Assume for the moment it's $10. There are 28 of them, that's $280.

The core charge is $1350, which includes $280 worth of bad modules. So the value (not the price!) of an empty battery pack is $1070.

Bad modules have no value to Toyota;).

Having everything packaged correctly and how they want it back in the package you received the good modules in has the value to Toyota :).

    They use a binary equation:
    • if everything is as it is supposed to be: $1350 is yours
    • If everything isn’t as it is supposed to be: $0 is yours
Ever try to buy or sell modules? There’s a good market for them but still falls short of the core charge (you can usually pick up some used modules for between $25-35 a piece). Some of these rebuilders save up the bad ones and then will trade that in on a core refund.

That’s how money is made in bad packs(y).

I recall reading a few years ago that the requirement for the new Toyota battery core refund is based on the core being inspected (by someone other than the dealer) and if found modified (i.e. cell replaced) the core charge will not be refunded. Can anyone confirm this?

If this is currently true then this means anyone (this includes me) that has a rebuilt battery (I currently have a Dorman rebuilt) will have to forfeit the core charge if they want to get a NEW battery. This changes the cost calculation for solving the next battery failure solution. Knowing this and my experience with unbalanced module replacements (very short term solution) and paying $$ for Dorman rebuilt product, I would opt for NEW battery if it could be obtained for under $2,000.

Got to stop by my local Autoway robber baron and see what the latest scam on hybrid battery’s are.

About 6 months ago the autoway service douche told me new oem installed battery was $3800 installed with my good unmolested core and there were 61 people on there waiting list. Bad core put another $1300 on that price. No aftermarket core accepted. At least in my neighborhood.

Our local Prius indie shop offering rebuilt pack with G3 modules with warranty for $2000 installed with good core. That was 6 months ago. Prob less with cash.
He’s a known Prius guy with great rep.
