He could have refused any or all of the service. He could have asked for a print out of what
    Toyota scheduled.
The reason places get away with stuff like that is because people just "trust they know what they are doing."
Hopefully they will take this as a learning experience and be wiser next time.
I retired from dealerships and repair shops because they flat out lied to the people.
I was fired because I wouldn't lie to the customer's face about work they didn't need.
I could have made a LOT of money, but I have to live with myself and was taught to be honest.
And I wouldn't want anyone in my family to get raped!
Yes they SHOULD be able to trust them, but you can't! It's a sad reality today.
I haven't lived to be 92 by trusting humans!!!!!

So it's the persons responsability to do the research and find a decent place.
I do feel sad for the original poster. It's usually AFTER something like this that people wake up.

My father always said "if you want something done right, do it yourself". It's been working for me!
That's why I learned how do much as I can so I don't have to spend the money having it done.

People are often surprised that I (an "old geezer" but not as old as you -- congratulations) do so much of my own auto maintenance, but I grew up watching my father rebuild tractor engines on the farm -- and I don't like paying other people to do something I can do myself, even if it takes me a day or two rather than an hour.
