New water pump 20 months after dealer put in lastone?

    This forum gave me great info the last time I had problems with my 2009

    Data:
    2009 134K miles
    Tech notes from 1/12/2018
    " Customer states there is a high pitched whirring noise when first starting car. Verified noise on write up Noise goes away after a min when the engine dies down.
    Cause "verified the concern. Removed the drive belt and found water pump bearing is a source of the noise. Re Replace water pump and drive belts in combo and retest. slight resistance in tensioner.d pully assy. Could be precursor sign of tensioner bearing failure.

    Correction: R?/R water pump and gasket and drive belt and belt tensioner pulley. Bled cooling system. Noise quieter but still present after water pump repair. Will need to replace tensioner pulley tensioner."

    After the dashboard going tilt with all of the lights on or a lot of them Dealer tech report is:
    "Upon inspection scanned vehicle and found code P0A93 inverter cooling performance insufficient. Recommended replacement of hybrid water pump."
    Could a water pump be the problem again? The coolant (pink fluid) is at the right level when car has been off for 90 min.

    There are two (2) separate coolant pumps in the vehicle, one is electric and the other mechanical.

    One is for moving the coolant around the internal combustion engine (ICE) It appears this one has been replaced.

    The other (electric pump) is for moving the coolant around the Inverter assembly. If your currently failed inverter pump has never been replaced before (aka P0A93), or replaced under a safety warranty recall (C0U or older), then you've made it longer on that inverter pump than many others at 134K miles. This one needs replacing.

    Actually the North American 2G Prius has four coolant pumps. The two mentioned above are the most important, however the other two are:

    3. electric heater core pump: this pump continues to circulate engine coolant when the engine is not operational, to help keep the cabin heater core hot
    4. electric engine coolant heat recovery system pump: this pump runs only for a few seconds upon startup/shutdown, to circulate hot coolant from/to the coolant heat recovery canister to/from the engine to speed up engine warmup time.

    Quite true. Felt it was best to only use the facts at hand, one pump was replaced and the other pump needs replacing. Anything else might cause additional confusion for the OP, who has made three (3) separate threads for this one P0A93 issue.

    Actually four, if you count the misplaced mechanic needed thread in the Prius v forum.

    I just had a drive inverter water pump replaced 3 weeks ago as the result of all the warning lights going off. Now my car just experienced a problem with only check engine light lit up. Car starts ok with hybrid battery then makes a loud grinding noise, which will stop after a bit if it goes back to hybrid power. Do you suspect it needs a different water pump also replaced??? The car is sitting in my office parking lot right now, as I had to get a ride home. Has not been seen by mechanic yet.

    Get the codes read and go from there. It is possible that the replaced pump has failed and is now making that noise, but that would be unusual. Not that it failed so quickly, that can happen with any part, even an OEM part, but that it was making a grinding noise. Small electric water pumps don't usually make grinding noises when they fail, they just burn out electrically/electronically, or they seize, silently.
