my job situation is such that I’ll be looking at 3 day/week commute 70 miles each way. Commute will be thru New York area (not thru Manhattan) into Long Island. So basically 60% of the ride each way in heavy traffic..basically 2 hours each way.

I’m exploring whether a hybrid makes sense. I’ve got 15-18K budget. Thoughts on whether hybrid is way to go and recommendations on models/years to consider appreciated.

I’ll probably do this commute for 2-3 years then move on.

    Thx.

In the 20-45mph range at a steady speed, the Prius is at it's very best in terms of gas mileage and performance... Sometimes heavy traffic can be like that. In stop and go traffic, not so much... But that's true with any car... Do you like to work on and learn about cars? Prius is great for that. If I were you I'd buy the very best Prius made, the Gen2 2009. If you can find one with super low mileage in the 10K range and set aside the rest of your budget for new battery pack of $2k when that time comes. Alternatively you could buy a Gen3 Prius instead and spend more money, but those cars blow head gaskets if you don't regularly clear the EGR valve and add an oil catch can.
