2006 Prius won't start after running out of gas

    My daughter called to say her 06 Prius (190K) died. When I went to check it out, here's the story:

    - car wouldn't start, fuel gage flashing "E", I put in 2.5G and was able to drive to Advance Auto
    - they read the code, which I don't remember but he said it meant "ran out of gas"
    - checked the 12V battery, very low, replaced it
    - drove away and the car was shuddery, went straight to gas station, barely limped in
    - had to push the car to the pump, filled up
    - would not start after filling, stuck in parking lot
    - sat in lot overnight while I got on the internet
    - tried resetting system 2 ways (from Priuschat posts): (1) remove ground, wait 5 minutes, try to start, no go; (2) with key in, push start, dash lights come on but not running (like accessory mode), remove connectors from + side of battery, wait 10 minutes, try to start, gas engine barely comes on then stops after a few seconds

    In looking at the internet, I see these possibilities:
    1. Codes need to be cleared before car can start again.
    2. Hybrid battery is shot b/c it was old already, and limping along draining it to the bottom did it in

    It's currently sitting at a local auto shop that works on hybrids, but they won't start until Monday morning. So I still have time to try something else before the $$ signs start lining up.

    welcome!
    if you don't have a code reader, it's a tough guessing game. if you want to be cautious, pay the mech for the codes and post them here.

    if he's good, the advice will be pretty much the same.

    kind of odd that it started and drove after putting the gas in. did you notice the battery level?

    The first time I put in the 2.5G, it drove normally and I saw the battery bars increasing from (I think) 1 to maybe 3. It was only a mile drive. But then after stopping and putting in the new 12V battery, the gas engine soon cut off and I was limping on the last of the hybrid battery. It certainly got down to 1 bar, and there was nothing left since I had to push the car to get it into a parking spot.

    I would check the replacement battery just to be sure it was not defective.

    the 12V battery seems good, still well over 12V

    Did you by any chance mess with the Orange interlock on the HV battery?

    There is some detail that must have been left out on the 12v death and subsequent change out.

    Is there any power when you try to start it? Any dash lights? Headlights? Interior lights?

    There is a common problem where the Gen2 cars have a bad combination meter and the entire dash lights go out. So this MAY seem like the car is not on, but if you wait 10 seconds, the engine will probably start without any dash lights.

    Also since this all happened after changing the 12v, I would suspect maybe there is a loose connection.

    But this all may be pointless since the car is already at a hybrid shop, they should know how to troubleshoot it.

    i have heard of getting the codes cleared after running out of gas in some instances, not sure why.

    maybe the battery is on its last legs and wouldn't turn the engine over anymore.

    Jc9: I didn’t go near the hybrid battery. Replaced 12V because it had been my hunch before I got to the car and saw the as was low. I went to Advance to get the code read. 12V checked bad so,I went ahead and replaced it — had already bought it online with 25% off.

    All dash lights come on, incl. triangle and “problem” on the display.

    I fiddled with 12V connections but no change.

    My bet is the hybrid battery is bad. This happens very often when you run out of gas the engine dies and your able to drive it for a while on the hybrid battery. Like it’s magic.

    Sometimes people try to make t to the gas station in limp mode and that puts an extreme load on the already tired battery. It really heats up the battery and will expose a soft module. One module in 28 calls it a day the battery throws a delta nag and its nightly night for the battery.

    Running out of gas in a Prius can be very expensive.

    Without a hybrid capable code reader it’s all supposition.
    If it was me I would get one ASAP so your not at the mercy of the dealer god help you.

    Go to Amazon.com buy a VXDIAG with Toyota techstream. Works with a laptop it’s the same software the dealer uses. It will tell you exactly what the car is unhappy about and identify the bad modules.

    There is still a chance the new 12v battery is bad. If it's been sitting on the shelf for a while, it could have drained. Getting a reading of over 12v right after you shut off the car doesn't have much meaning. It just seems very odd everything happened after the change out. I would load test that battery.

    Did you accidentally connect the positive and negative terminals wrong? Even a split second?

    Also Ed has a good point, running out of gas could have drained the HV battery and killed it.

    The symptom of the car engine shuttering is not really a bad hv battery symptom, the engine should not be affected that quickly.

    At this point you'll have to wait and see what the professionals say.

    I’ve run my 2005 out of gas turned off the ac and used the last of the battery to make it to a pump many, too many times. And once, when I had made it to within half a block to a station I waited a few minutes waiting for a tow to bring gas then decided to press start and go for it! Like you I had to push it the last 15 feet to the pump. Just as the tow arrived I was finishing filling the tank. Though when I pressed start, NOTHING! Not what I was used to. The AAA guy got his jumper battery out and we tried that too. And NOTHING!!!
    Completely confused I got a tow home. And slept on it.
    I found the next day when I disconnected the 12 volt battery it was low. So I charged it while I checked out some of the fuses and everything else I could imagine. I figured after 30 min I could reconnect the 12 volt and all codes would have been cleared. They were thou I noticed the dome light dimmed when I turned the headlamps on. So I figured the 12volt was still low and decided to use jump port at the front to be sure 12volts was there.
    Everything came back to life and I made a post about it here on Prius chat. I read what happens to you and if I read correctly your situation is the same ran out of gas added some didn’t quite make it to the pump and drained the Hybrid battery’s then filling the tank you attempted to start it with a fresh 12 volt battery. You need to clear the codes by disconnecting the 12 volt. This will reboot the entire system.

    Paul, that sure does sound like my situation. Except: I did disconnect the 12V, 2 different ways (see my first post).

    The shop fiddled with it all day yesterday, but couldn't get it started. Said they cleared the codes but they kept coming back every time they tried to start the car.

    Here are the codes:
    P3190
    P0A80
    P0A0F

    Bisco, re:your comment, here's another piece of information. When I put in the first 2.5G, I borrowed a gas can that already had about 0.5G in it. Who knows how long it had been sitting in this guy's yard. After I filled the can the rest of the way with fresh gas and put it in the car, it started and I drove fine to Advance Auto. And it started up OK after they replaced the 12V battery. It wasn't until about 1/2 mile away that it shuddered and lost power -- that's when I headed for the gas station.
    Maybe there was water/crud in the gas can that had a delayed reaction to the ICE.

    Current plan is to tow to the dealer.

    But now I'm thinking I may give it one more try after charging the 12V with my truck (or one of our other 3 Prius) for a bit -- make sense?
    Maybe I should also dump a bottle of dry gas in the tank.

    The codes point to needing a new hybrid battery as well as poor engine power. So you are left with a difficult decision and the costs will not be cheap to get this running again.

    The hybrid battery acts as a starter to the I C engine. Drain it low enough and you cannot turn the ICE with it. Remember the 12volt starts the Hybrid system ECU’s and not the engine. Those codes will be thrown 1 the battery has failed 2 the ice engine has no power and three the entire Hybrid system fails.
    Fix the root problem by charging the hybrid battery and all the codes resolve themselves. 1 the 12 volt battery starts the ecu’s the the Hybrid system starts the Engine with Mg1 by holding Mg2 and rotating the crankshaft as a starter would. The engine will develope power within the timed window. And charging of the hybrid battery will commence as required by the hybrid system.

    The dealer just diagnosed it as needing a new hybrid battery. At almost 200K, that makes a lot of sense. My daughter is deciding whether to move on -- the car also has significant body damage -- or get a reconditioned hybrid battery from Green Bean. We just got one for one of our other Prius and although it was $1700 including tax, it's very nice to have a 5 year warranty.

    I didn't know new batteries had come down so much in price. But now Green Bean has a LIFETIME warranty.

    Here are the pros/cons of Green Bean compared to a new battery as I see them:
    Pros
    - they are located in NC, close to where we live, so it's likely they can do a quick replacement if the battery dies near home
    - I won't have to do any work or spend any time installing or testing (when GB did our other Prius back in June, they came the morning after I called and installed the battery in under an hour while I watched)
    - they now have a lifetime warranty

    Cons
    - the battery won't perform (lower MPG?) as well as a new battery
    - if the battery dies on a trip we may be stuck for a bit
    - no way to know if GB will stay in business

    Does that cover it?
