Weird Windshield Washer Issue

    I have a issue that I haven't seen anywhere.

    The cycle goes like this (when spraying the windshield with fluid):
    1st press - nothing
    2nd press - right side only
    3rd press - both works

    If I keep pressing, works fine. If I wait a little while, goes right back to the above cycle.

    What do you think?

    Checked the nozzle, doesn't seem to be clogged. Does the 1 pump drive the front and back washers?

    Maybe I'll check the 3-way check valve under the hood.

    It's the check valve, part no 85321-28020. It's under the hood liner.

    My original symptom was weak passenger side spray. Cleaned the nozzle still the same until i read some old post.

    It can also be a leak in the plumbing.

    In order to get almost instant liquid delivery, the hoses all must stay full, or almost full, all the time.
    If that is the case, it might be spraying out where the leak is when the pump runs.

    I do NOT think the front pump has anything to do with the back washer.
    But that's just a guess.

    thanks for the tip. I don't see any leaks. Going to order a check valve, it's pretty cheap.
    are there any clamps that hold the hose onto it?

    No clamps, just held on by just friction. Just make sure that the new one is connected the same.

    Also having a problem with the passenger side (only) windshield wiper fluid spray. What's the trick to getting these bad boys off? It's besting me!

    I pulled the hood liner fasteners on my 2010 to replace the check valve a few months ago. Which fixed my weak-on-one-side spray problem. I used a standard clip removal tool (one of those forked flat blade thingies), and yes I made small tear in the liner and a couple of the clips were damaged. The liner also crushes easily.

    If I were doing it again I'd say buy some replacement clips in advance so that you can trade being more abusive to the old clips against being extra careful with the expensive and delicate liner. Then: pry the clips up gently until you can grab with a pliers and rip them out without further touching the liner.

    So far I haven't needed to replace the damaged clilps. But I did notice Toyota replaced them with a better design. Good luck!

    For the clips? From my notes:
    90467A0003 MSRP $1.84
    The hood insulator uses 6 of them. That would only be $8 from TPD, but another $9 in shipping. A bag of knock-off ones on Amazon can be had for about $8 with free shipping (but not Amazon fulfillment). Original toyota ones on ebay are surprisingly expensive (like $5).​

    Yeah I don't know that I would use those same clips again. I partially destroyed one corner of the liner and the clip isn't out yet.
