Do hub rings work with steel wheels?

I think so. Corolla rims work, have correct hub opening, but are getting pricey.

 

I went with these rims 9 years back:

Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S)

For $70 (CDN) apiece. Through local dealership, as part of a snow tire package. Looking them up now they seemed to be priced close to $100 (US) apiece on EBay. But just for giggles it wouldn't hurt to ask, at local Toyota dealership. "Take-off" rims is something to ask for too.

 

I just ordered Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 snow tires (same size: 195/65R15) from SimpleTire.com, where they were slightly cheaper even than at TireRack: $296, including shipping (not as fast as TireRack's), not including the 2 year protection plan that TireRack includes. I also found an online coupon that gave me 5% off in return for signing up for email from SimpleTire, so the price came to $281.09 plus sales tax.

 

From time to time DiscountTire Direct has special saving on wheel and tire package deal. I just checked the site, but they don't have as good of a deal as I got last year. Michelle Xice3 and MB alloy wheels mounted balanced, including installation kit for ~$450 shipped free.

 

Yeah but they don't look the part, lol.

 

Do you keep on year-round? R3 is all-weather tire with a mountain peaks and snowflake logo, isn't it?

Edit: Never mind! I was thinking of WRG3 tires by Nokian. Not R3 which apparently is dedicated stud less snow tires.

I bought Blizzaks and steel wheels from Tire Rack last year. The wheels have the correct hub bore, but there is a little more tolerance on it than an alloy wheel, which I think has a very slight taper and fits tight in my experience. Looks like I paid $650 total for the wheels and tires with no TPMS sensors.

The Blizzaks on the front wore super fast. They have less grip on dry pavement than all season tires, so they break loose in EV mode all the time even when I try to accelerate somewhat carefully. I'll rotate those to the rear this year, but I think I'll only be able to get about three seasons out of this set.

Michelin Xice have a 40,000 mile treadwear warranty. Of course it's nearly impossible to collect on the warranty because of all the conditions, the worst being that apparently you have to use them down to 2/32", but you are only allowed to use them during the winter months. But at least it's a sign that they have some confidence in how long they will last. I think I'll try those next time.

Tire rack even says "We advise removing winter tires at 5/32"", and I'd probably replace them even before that.

Also, "In order to maintain the treadwear warranty on your tires, the tires must be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles (10,000 -12,000 km), or as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, whichever rotation period is less. Failure to rotate the tires as provided herein voids the treadwear warranty" since the Prime has a super annoying 5,000 mile rotation interval, and I only drive a little over 5,000 miles in the winter, it would be a waste of time to rotate them during the winter.

 

I find the X-Ice have good bare-road manners, feel just slightly firmer than a typical all-season. Around here we get the rare snow dump, but mostly it's bare roads, and a fair bit of rain. Ours are going on nine years old now, no cracking, and about 7/32" remaining. Only 84K kms on the car though, and the snow tires at most 1/4 of that.

 

Expect the all-weather tires...all-season with the snowflake/mountain cert...to have less traction on ice than a good winter tire.

C$800 is about US$604. Yep, many things in Canada do cost more.

I'm very pleasantly surprised at the low tread wear on my Blizzak DM-V2 on my CX-9. I haven't used the WS-80. We have Xice Xi-3 on the Prime, very low wear rate, not sure if the ice traction will be as good as the Blizzak. Steel wheels from Discount Tire sprayed with silver hammered-finish rattle-can spray paint, chrome acorn lug nuts & center caps and Toyota stickers from eBay--looks OK for snows. Discount originally sold me some "tuner" lug nuts that needed a special wrench and weren't even threaded correctly--high friction on & off.

 

I used these lug nuts with the steel corolla rims:

I'm not too thrilled that they're open ended though, would prefer acorn: the stud tips are exposed, start to get rust bloom. I put a drop of oil on them, that's usually good for halfway through winter. Oh, and they don't have "shoulders", so to avoid chewing the paint off the rim you need to be careful when putting a socket on them.

 

Tire rack gave me open ended lug nuts. I sprayed them with Fluid Film, but there's still some corrosion. There's a thread somewhere that has a link to closed acorn nuts.
