But just 5 liters left IS nearly empty, by all common standards on this forum. It is far beyond the very last low fuel warning, and not enough fuel left to get to the next available fuel station in numerous parts of the western North America.

You don't need an opinion poll on this, just do the math: figure out your fuel economy, for a tank or two, then armed with that, figure out how you'd get on 40 liters, or 35 liters, whatever you're comfortable with.

 

Guesstimate you could use for fuel economy:

5 liters per 100 kms
47 mpg US
56 mpg IMP

(realistic, mixed driving)

 

We typically refuel at 500 miles +/-50. A rule of thumb I read in some PC thread was to take the average MPG displayed on the multi-function display and multiply that x10 to set the point at which you should stop and refuel. The reason that is a reasonable rule of thumb, is that the fuel tank is 11.9 US gallons, and thus if the consumption estimates are correct, you have a 1.9 gallon safety margin.

hello, i am new to this so hopefully i am doing this correctly. I have a question about my Prius. The tank hold 11.9 Gallons and i see a lot of people say that get anywhere from 500-600 on a full tank. Gas prices here are not bad and i always try to fill my tank up. Always caps me around $20-$25 on a full tank but my mileage goes only about 350-375. Today i put some gas in and decided to go cheap and go to the nearest cheapest gas station and it spent only $15, figured it'll maybe do a difference but still i only got 375 miles on full tank. now my question is, Is this normal over time or should i be getting 500-600 miles to a full tank of gas?

 

Dollar$ per tank doesn't help us provide a good answer. Some people are getting gas for under $2/gallon, when others must pay $4/gal. Please tell us how many gallons you are putting in for your refills.

Also, the 11.9 gallons per tank spec applies only if you run it dry, forcing the car to roll to a stop. Normal drivers don't do that, it is unpredictable and terribly inconvenient at best. Please tell us how low you are running your fuel gauge. Some people refill when 3 or 4 bars are still showing, while others wait until the bottom bar starts flashing, then go another 50-100 miles. These differing groups get very very different miles per tank, even when they are getting the exact same MPGs.

Also, tell us what your dashboard MPG display reads, resetting it at each refueling. This number is a fiction, reading a bit higher than your true MPG, but is close enough to be a good starting point.

And for best feedback, don't give us coarse rounded numbers from memory, that just hides too many issues. Keep a fuel log, in a paper notebook or a phone app or other convenient recording means, and give us your actual fuel pump and trip odometer readings.

If you are not getting over 50 MPG, and/or not running the fuel gauge past the low fuel warnings (flashing bottom bar, followed soon by Distance To Empty = 0 miles), then forget about the idea of 600 mile tanks.
