It’s happening! Toyota is expanding it’s Plug-in options in a major way by making a RAV4 Plug-in PHEV available for sale in 2020. No word of any kind on range or pricing yet, but Toyota was clear that the RAV4 Plug-in will be the most powerful RAV4 in the lineup.

This is a very exciting announcement as Toyota has seemed hesitant on their public commitment to battery-powered vehicles in the recent past.

Here’s Toyota’s full press release on it:

    2021 RAV4 Plug-in Powers Up for 2019

Los Angeles Auto Show Toyota Teases Most Powerful RAV4 Yet

PLANO, Texas (October 10, 2019) – Toyota teased today what will become the most powerful RAV4 yet – the 2021 RAV4 plug-in. Bringing with it a new color, Supersonic Red, the teaser image of the RAV4 plug-in highlights the new PHV’s surprising performance capabilities. Unlike any other, the new RAV4 Plug-in will be celebrated by its spirited acceleration, nimble handling and impeccable style.

Toyota will debut the Toyota RAV4-plugin during the Los Angeles Auto Show media days, on November 20, 2019 at the Toyota booth in South Hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

    Will it retain AWD?
It doesn't seem the Escape PHEV will have that option.

Gas mileage must at least be on par with the 2020 Ford Escape Energi or else its DOA.

2x Prime puts it at 17.6kWh. That’ll gain the extra rebate in Canada over the Escape (14.4kWh) as the threshold is 15kWh. This is a big deal if Toyota can pull it off.

Both Ford and Audi just miss the mark under 15kWh for the Escape and Q5 respectively.

Doesn’t that mean 2x as long to charge it?

Only if it remains at 3.3kW. If they add a 6.6kW charger, it’ll be around the same time (2.5hr I’m guessing. A few more minutes needed for the cell balancing part at the end)

Is it liquid cooled like the Escape pack? If not, I'd expect loss of cargo space.

no idea. I still haven’t seen the current RAV4 in person yet so I haven’t checked out the rear cargo floor.

Hopefully 1) it comes to Australia; and 2) comes in both FWD and AWD versions like the current RAV4 Hybrid.

Almost certainly no - have a look in the boot area of RAV4 and it would be much too much of a compromise (ie very short legs only).

I believe that is a good point in a BEV, but in a hybrid not much.

Nice! And will chime in that the rear seat in the Highlander is worthless and takes up cargo space (Toyota's answer was to make everything bigger 2020 and bigger is not better). So I hope the Rav 4 doesn't go down the Homer Mobile route.
Rav 4 Hybrid is a great car. Not too high and not too low.
A perfect car would be a Camry Hybrid hatchback with 2 more inches of ground clearance.

Remember the Camry Wagon - a couple of generations ago - was a very popular car.
