    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Could you post the VIN, someone might be interested in purchasing it before you junk it.

Beware that you don't simply 'take your car to Canada'. You will need to make sure the car is on the list of admissible vehicles (all 2007 Toyotas are), add Daytime Running Lights, and have a certification that all safety recalls are up to date. You'll have to 'export' it from the U.S. first, then 'import' it to Canada, and pay import fees ($300+? plus GST/HST?). Search online for all the rules and paperwork and wait times (e.g. calling ahead to the U.S. border export station at least 72 hour in advance) and common snags.

Strangely, I see a ton of cars, with BC plates, and no daytime running lights.

You still have plenty of life in your car and the fact you'll be further north means less hot weather, which is a killer for hybrid battery packs.... I don't know anything about moving a car across the border though, so maybe there could be some problems with that?

Are they being intentionally modified or disconnected? Or are they leaks in the import inspection system? Unrepaired component failures? Or ...
At 13 years old, it is a bit too late to get much from that potential benefit.

I think it will depend on what your budget is like - I'd be inclined to buy a new, or newer one. But a 12 yo Prius, unless it's beat-up, is not due for junk yard yet - it still can sell for up to $2K I think, or it can be donated to a charity of your choice.

Ah, there must be two sets of rules: one for the locals, and one for the foreigners.

That must depend on where you are. My favorite parts don't have much, if any, public transport. Except where summer crowds require Park service shuttles from off-site to the best attractions.

It's true, I've seen giant convoys of buses moving people all around the arctic circle... And just because Canada is about the same amount of sq. miles as the USA doesn't mean their public transit is non-existent like in the US, quite the opposite really... All buses and no riders. Trust Bisco, get rid of your car, you won't need it.

Could be all of the above except the import inspection part.

They probably installed it, went for inspection then removed it after it passed. We don’t have annual inspections so you can modify after you’ve played and got insurance. Of course, you can always be ticketed by the local constabulary if they feel like it.

there is an exception (I think cars older than 25 years old don’t need to have DRLs if it’s not already installed)

Sorry I can't tell if you are joking. Canada generally has terrible public transport. If you live in one of the big cities like Toronto it is adequate but not compared to Europe. If you want to go anywhere else there are very minimal bus and train services, but not to everywhere.
I can't believe cars in the United States still don't have daytime running lights. If you car is in really good shape it might be worth it but Ontario is kind of a pain when you register a car for the first time. It does not have regular safety inspection like in the province I live in, but they do have inspection for when a car is first registered, and it is very strict. Basically everything the car had when it was purchased new has to be working properly. And I believe Ontario also has emissions testing. So I would only bring your car if you think your car will pass these tests without too many repairs. Also you will have to have daytime lights added if your car does not have them. That usually does not cost very much. With the Prius I would guess it might be just a programming thing, since they have automatic lights.

I recall commuting from North Coquitlam, to a job just over the bridge into Surrey. This was before the Skytrain was completely to our neighbourhood. By car it's 20~30 minutes. In those days you still had paper transfers, and they expired after 90 minutes. The last bus I got on, I was past the 90 minutes, the guy took pity on me.

Now the Skytrain is through, but NIMBY's won the day: a few blocks away from us is a main street with an extra wide median, that was intended for Skytrain. That was axed, the nearest station for us is completely beyond the community, the other side of the freight train tracks, basically in the woods (1.3 kms distant).

By any chance, was that Guildford Way?

I pass through that area nearly every year to support a major bicycling event. As a non-local, it is not easy to get around, or to follow the cyclists as they take several pedestrian-only paths where cars cannot follow. But the worst part is having to go back to fetch stranded or disabled riders. The layout and traffic congestion lead to very slow responses to these calls.

Yup. We were a couple of short blocks from the proposed station at Guildford and Lansdowne, but Nimby's won the day. :(

Yup, our event passes through that intersection. You've probably been caught in our traffic disturbance, but at least by that point the riders are well spread out and trickling through just a few at a time. Though for many hours.

Eventually, down here, we'll have a Link Light Rail station just over a mile away, provided funding isn't killed by any of several forces working against it. (We've already paid plenty, don't want to see that thrown away.) I just hope that it opens in time for us to use it before we get put into an old folks' home.
