Gen 3 Battery value?

    Hey guys,

    I recently got into an accident this weekend and my car didn't make it :( Thankfully my wife and I did and we're definitely counting our blessings. So I'm currently trying to part out the car and was wondering what the value on the battery is going for. It's the original battery with 73k miles on it. The original owner purchased lifetime warranty on the battery and I was wondering it would still be valid if I sold the battery separately to someone else? Either way, just trying to get a ballpark on the value of this time. Thanks in advanced!

    it's might be worth five hundred bucks to someone. as for the warranty, they are all different. you'll have to read the fine print.

    One could try and argue that a new OEM battery is around 1850 without installation, and if the usable life is 200k (conservative), then it could be worth 600+. Most "used" or "refurbished" frankenpack HV batteries that are for sale around that price point wouldn't even compare to a 73k OEM, so you could easily ask for more. But there is always the supply and demand part of the equation, not to mention who will remove it from the vehicle.

    Adding in the lifetime warranty could be tricky, unless you know who will honor that warranty and if they allow for it to be transferred.

    Did a local search at Search Results

    There is a 2013 with a reported 80k going for 700 in the Sacramento area. Also a couple of 2015's claiming to have around 60k (note the grade "A") for 850, don't know if either require a core fee or exchange. There are plenty of others junk yards charging more though.

    I'd give you $500 for it if you were close to me. $300 would be an absolute steal, I wouldn't sell it for that. I would probably ask $800+ and hold firm on offers until you are sure you can't get that.

    I've never seen OEM for $1850 not to mention a $1000+ core charge, not to mention I've never actually heard an instance of someone just "picking up" and OEM battery from a dealer (not saying it doesn't happen, just skeptical that it's that easy).

    Most likely the junkyards are charging a core charge also. So like I said any savy person buying a working low mile HV battery for $300-500 with no core charge is getting an absolute steal.

    some dealers will sell to the public, some won't. prices from the ones that will, vary. they won't ship, so you are chained to the ones your willing to drive to. some locations are better than others.
    san jose is probably decent

    How do they deal with the core charge though? Can I just walk in with my old battery and walk out with a new one? Don't they want to examine it? I would think some if not most dealers would want to do all the work themselves.

    Does anyone know of any sites where one can browse for a listing of parts with prices? Now that I'm parting out the car, I'd like to be able to answer people asking for prices on certain parts, and I want to be fair to both of us.

    Sure, it's called ebay.

    But if you're going to try to get ebay prices, you aren't going to sell anything. People looking at Craigslist, LetGo, etc aren't looking for ebay prices. they're looking for yardsale prices. keep that in mind.

    And if you find someone foolish enough to pay $800 for a 2013 HV battery, I would be absolutely amazed. Even $500 is pushing the limit, but I could see it happening with the miles you have. $800 could get you a Gen 4 from a wreck.

    Which is exactly why I need to know what are the going prices for local listings so I can give them a better deal than that while not ripping myself off. I hope you can understand. This is a pretty shitty situation to be in, so I'm trying to make the most of it.

    They charge you the core and refund when you return a properly packaged core. You need some parts off the old pack to put on the new OEM one anyway. It is not wise to walk in with your old battery to exchange for a new one. If you forgot to remove some part, you need to buy that part new.

    That's basically my point. There's way more to it than "a new battery is $1850." A core charge is a major factor in the purchase of a HV battery which everyone quoting prices seems to omit. Please point me to a nice young battery for a gen3 under $800 with no core charge?

    I can't do all your work for you....but they are out there, it's just a matter of looking and calling. Some want core fees, some don't, but I've found that cash talks and BS walks. And many times core fees take the walk when hundred dollar bills are in your hand....I have a couple with mid 2013 manufacture dates I'd sell you for $799 (each not both) with no core fee. Come on' down to Columbia and bring cash (y) I'll hook you right up.

    And I would imagine the majority of people that buy a new Toyota battery at a dealer put the purchase on a credit card. And the CC gets credited upon return of the core. So in actuality, a core charge is a net zero and the purchaser never sees any impact from it.

    Even so, then you are paying a nice fee for shipping, along with a decent hassle. $2200 is the best price I would expect someone to be able to get, all said and done for an OEM. I just don't see $800 as that bad of a deal for a 6yo used battery, especially from a guy parting his wreck that you could probably pull yourself (and you still have another battery).

    I'm certainly no expert though, just giving my 2 cents.

    You said $500 was pushing it. I'll give you $450. Can I watch/help you pull it out of the car it came in?

    i don't think anyone ships the oem. if you can't find one you're willing to drive to, you're out of luck

    ya, that doesn't work either. they're likely to tell you it's not complete, and won't refund your core. buying from a dealer is a bit difficult, so to your point, if you can find a known quantity in a newer low mile salvage, it's probably the way to go.
    or, you can get a new aftermarket shipped to you for $1,600. and keep your old battery

    Why don't you just drive to Michigan and buy a 2015? You can paypal me $125, which is half of what you save for getting it under $800

    You can get a kit of new cells for $1600 shipped to your door. That basically gives you a new battery and you can sell your old modules to reduce your cost further. The link is in my signature and @2k1Toaster is a trusted user here.
