Oddly, though, most owners value gas mileage over being obnoxious.

I hear this is a primary motivating factor in the purchase of a hybrid vehicle.

Here we must take the greatest care to distinguish 'obnoxious' from 'smug'.

Have you heard a Tesla’s exhaust note? Me either, but I’m pretty sure they’re quieter by virtue of not having a traditional exhaust system at all. If there’s no Tesla’s on the block though, you definitely win that prize (y)

The OP asked if he can drive in B. To that end I answered his question with my own problem-free experience thus far.

Someone towed a Leaf into into town. No Teslas that I see, although there is a Supercharger just 35 miles away now.
Mostly it is a couple Volts and a dozen Prius.

Years ago, Mississippi had fewer Prius per capita than any other state, That is now true for Teslas.
0.22% of Mississipians own a Tesla, next is North Dakota with 0.24%. Highest is 7.84% in California

Mississippi is the forth least per capita car ownership for all vehicles, only New York, New Jersey, and Maryland have fewer cars per 1000 people.

Maybe it's something wonderful in human nature that makes us want to look for improvement or a better way of doing or using something?
    Maybe it is.....

But it's so frustrating over the years, when people embrace sometimes dangerous, often chimerical, rituals of operation, based on the unfounded mythology of improvement or possibility.

Toyota isn't detailed about what happens when you use it, but they are pretty clear about what "B" mode is suppose to be used for. Hills..Mountains, extended downhill stretches. That's it.

Toyota provides a recommended PSI for your tires. It's in the Owners Manual and actually attached to a sticker on your car. That's it.

And Toyota openly tells you, that your Prius isn't designed to tow things. It's not designed to tow, -that's it.

But over and over, people inflate their tires to ridiculously high and dangerous PSI.
They find amazingly unneeded but clever ways to employ "B" mode, like they found a Golden Ticket to tour of a Chocolate Factory, that nobody else has...including Toyota.
And in any thread about towing something, people will proudly provide pictures of their Prius trailer hitched to full sized museum exhibits, that they have pulled up to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Toyota has designed a mode for driving around town. It's called "just start it, and drive it" mode. It works pretty good.
