Ever since the Gen 2 came out there's only been one motive power for the air conditioner and that's the HV battery. But guess where the electrons come from that go into and out of that battery. Gasoline. One might say, "What about regenerative braking or coasting?" Well, guess how you got that speed and/or elevation in the first place. Unless it's a plug-in, it came from gas.

On this and another thread, the Prime's very limited 25 mile EV range has been discussed.

Interestingly ..... VW just introduced the ID.3 .... with 3 different battery packs and 3 different ranges.
    That really appeals to me.

I recognize the Prime is a plug-in and the ID.3 is an EV, but I predict the VW is going to be a very popular vehicle.

It depends on pricing (duh!), and even so, eGolfs are on huuuuge sale now and yet plenty sit on the lots collecting dust. Plus rather questionable VW reputation.

Rather questionable? That's pretty generous. ;) I would never do business with someone that unethical. I mean they almost all lack in integrity, but that one had to have broken all the records.

That's you. Money speaks, and most customers couldn't care less re ethics if the price is right. Otherwise VW (along with Porsche/Audi/Lambo/etc. ) wouldn't be selling in millions. I was referring more to quality, both initial and long term.

It's a PHEV, not a BEV. Toyota had to find a sweet spot where most users could get the majority of their in-town driving on EV. Bigger battery = more weight, more cost and the like. Just from my experience, about 99% of my local mileage is on EV. In addition, when I'm on a trip I get the benefits of high fuel economy from the gas engine. None of the competing PHEV's can match the gas mileage of the Prime. That's what led me to buy this car. For others, higher EV range may be more important, but they give up something else to obtain that.

I basically bought an efficient EV for less than CAD$40k since 90% of my odo has been in EV.

    A great setup :).

Significant other approved in my case and even mentioned it today(y).

As for those that buy the base model, it’s $29k CAD. Not bad considering the LEAF starts at $41k and in my case would’ve cost $36k (I bought before the federal incentive. With federal rebate, it’s $31k... a much harder decision).

Still not a bad deal with incentives (y).

Nope. Cars are priced at 1.1-1.2x and have been since 2014. Except Tesla. Tesla charges the full exchange rate. Our TM3 SR Plus is $54,990 to start. Our dual motor LR is $65,990. All before incentives.

The SR that nobody will buy because Tesla limited the range to 90 miles is $44,999. So basically our cheapest Tesla is $54,990 before incentives (about $51k OTD no options)

Most people are greedy and short sighted. At least, if not most, enough to keep the Nigerian scammers, politicians, snake oil salesmen, and VW in business. That's why we have spam and lotteries. ;)

You obviously have a lot more knowledge than I do about "Spam and Lotteries."

I bought a 1962 "Bug" new and it was a tremendous automobile for the time.

Then I bought a196? Squareback ... It was the worse car I even owned.

Then years later I bought a rebuilt "Bug" assembled from various wrecks and re-licensed. It was great for my kid's until it was involved in an accident.

Otherwise .... I know nothing about VW business, political affiliations, snake oil salesmen and etc.

A few weeks ago, my lead-footed wife drove my car in pure EV mode back and forth on the highway. I figure about halfway back at 75 mph, she switched over to HV. When I jumped in my car the next day, this one trip had killed my EV range from the low 30's to ~26. I've charged it up and used it the "normal way" for about 10 charge cycles now and it's not going back up. This morning, it dropped to only 25 miles. What the heck is going on here?

hey, I just drive it, looking to get miles up myself but between old driving habits and just having to get stuff done, would be nice to know how. Did you try to reset your data on display?

Nah, this will be my third winter with this car and this is new. I have seen the EV meter drop down to just around 29 in the winter but never this low.

What are your daily record of miles/kWh on the Eco Diary from initial 30's to ~26 drop, then while you did "normal way" for about 10 charge cycles? GOM is closely tied to those daily numbers. But it drops very quickly after a single day of very low miles/kWh and takes a long time to bring it back up. See my daily record of GOM below. A single day of low (4.3 miles/kWh) tanked GOM from 43miles to 39miles. It took one month of above 5miles/kWh (average ~8-9miles/kWh) to bring the GOM number back to where it was. Your 10 days may not be long enough.

So parking in garage doesn't help? or is it heat usage

Do you mean, parking in garage to help increase EV miles?

I never park my car in a garage, but I doubt that will help much in terms of increasing EV range in winter. Maybe a little. That is if heated garage, thus you don't have to use the battery for initial heating to bring the cabin temperature up. But in my case, I start up my car with ICE on to use the heat anyway. In most winter morning, ICE comes on no matter what I do.
