    I just read this article about Tesla's new truck. It is futuristic looking, like something out of Mad Max.

    Price for lowest level RWD with one motor, 0 - 60 in 6.5 seconds and 250 mile range is around $40k.
    Price for mid level AWD with two motors, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds no range specified and around $50k
    Price for high end AWD with three motors, 0-60 in 2.9 seconds and 10 second quarter mile.
    long range 500 mile version is $70k.

    i worked with contractors who drove pickups. i can't see anything appealing here. but i know there is another market as well. just not sure how many people want that in their driveway (n)

    I commented to my mate that I went from raucous laughter :ROFLMAO: to sobbing :cry: when I looked at it. He replied that it made him violently ill :sick:- and I suspect he's now overdosing on Coffee:coffee:.

    Meanwhile, someone over here accidentally re-styled a LandCruiser. It'll probably work again after a wheel alignment.

    What Tesla really nailed in their design is that true truck enthusiasts spend most of their time thinking about what they're going to accessorize their truck with, not what the base model truck looks like when it rolls off the assembly line...

    And Tesla couldn't of come up with a better blank canvas to build on... Adding a roll bar type rack and a winch type impact protection rack up front on a truck like that is going to look awesome. Also from a military perspective, it's the same profile as stealth fighters and stealth boats. Wonder if the radar profile is small as it appears it would be. I could see this vehicle being way bigger than the Hummer was when it first hit the market in terms of popularity.

    And the ability to configure into so many different uses at the same price as a big dumb ugly Ford or Ram truck that doesn't come with adjustable height bagged suspension at the push of a button... Two years from now when they start rolling off the assembly line, other truck sellers will lose market share real fast.

    What's especially remarkable about the design is how well it integrates with future buyer demographics... Up and coming generations spend huge amounts of time playing video games with trucks that already look like this. I bet the demographic data for who this truck is going to appeal to will make it a design that lasts a long time, unlike what most of the grumpy old folks who won't be around much longer think of how it looks.

    Also Unibody design like first Honda Ridgeline, rather than body on frame means you can haul way heavier loads:

    "Most often, a vehicle’s towing capacity is limited by body design rather than engine strength. Towing places a lot of stress on the vehicle’s frame. Want to pull more? Make a beefier frame under the truck. But with the unibody Tesla Cybertruck, to increase the towing capacity, it had to use as big of a sail pillar as possible, explaining the unconventional design."     Well Tesla is being sued when someone was trapped in their Tesla and the by-standers and police could not open the door, or apparently smash the window: Tesla sued by family of man who died in Model S fire - Business Insider

    NOTE: I have no opinion to share about this accident, the law suit, or a fractured window glass.

    sounds like the author is trying to justify it to herself :rolleyes:

    kinda reminds me of all the 'reasons' toyota couldn't make the battery fit in the prime.

    Jokes aside, the cyborg truck can pull off the trick if ...

    (1) The price, (2) The specs and (3) The timeline promises come true, and (4) The quality is acceptable, and (5) The economic conditions remain benign for the middle class, and (6) There is no game-changing breakthrough in the FC or another propulsion tech, outside of the Musk's tunnel vision, and (7) If by then the market is not saturated with more attractive functionally competitive mobility solutions, I see how Musk can sell these.

    will he sell some? of course. will it take 10 years to get to model 3 percentages? that would be disastrous.

    Always thought the key to marketing success was to satisfy a customer need/want in a quality, functional, cost effective way.

    I don't know the customer base this is directed at. I don't see the customer want/needs being satisfied here.

    It seems more an effort to force a company vision on the marketplace. Telsa may learn an expensive hard lesson here.

    Agreed. I think it's got a lot of impressive specs and I think it could develop its own following and eventually be a successful venture. That's not impossible, but it isn't a quick and easy path to profit.

    The surprise was that they didn't produce something to tap into the established light truck market, and it offers strong indications that doing such was never among their goals.

    If I were a shareholder I'd be livid.

    This could be the sort of moment Toyota (or frankly any of a number of other automakers) were waiting for. Why spend a pile of money developing battery factories and new engineering when they can just wait for Tesla to make an expensive mistake and buy the wreckage on the cheap?

    Consider these four trends:

    1. In the past 20-25 years the pickup truck has evolved from an austere work vehicle into a tank-size, opulent limoudzilla. And only very few people resented that.
    2. But this paradigm shift has not triggered a drastic change in the pickup truck layout and outward appearance, beyond making it progressively bulkier and more brutish
    3. And while pickup trucks have been selling well, this may not last for much longer, as the incoming generation of new vehicle buyers may be looking for something that wouldn't feel like regurgitating 20-30 year old cud ("= not yer grandpa's automobile").
    4. "Some" legacy manufacturers are driven increasingly by their quarterly growth and profitability targets, and do not appear to wholeheartedly cultivate long-term innovation ... which means they might kodak themselves into irrelevance during next recession, vacating whole market segments for others to grab.

    What would it take to bring these seeming conflicting trends to a point of confluence in near future? I'd argue that Musk could, before he retires on Mars.
