I got my car in March of this year and looked at the mileage logs on the MID. They matched up perfectly. That continued for months, however I just checked and the mileage log is off by 13mi.

When I add up all the miles from Jan '18 (when it first was driven) to today, it equals 21,644mi. However my odometer is showing 21,657mi. The only change I can think of was me getting new tires in October.

I seem to recall reading somewhere in the 1000's of pages of manuals about resetting something to compensate for new tires, but I cant find it for the life of me. The only thing I can find is the TPMS reset.

Has anyone else had this issue?

EDIT: I found the compensation for new tires... its in the navigation calibration settings. Do these affect whats displayed in the MID? (I feel like they're separate systems). Anyway, I'll reset it there for giggles.

Tires have a revolutions per mile stat. Tirerack lists it under specifications,so you can compare the old to current tires.

When you say "the mileage logs on the MID", are you talking about the "Distance miles" driven on the monthly eco diary? I have never added up the number to see if it matches the ODO reading, but would it be possible that the eco diary values are somehow rounded from the daily values which shows 1/10 of mile values. That may end up in a small distance discrepancy?

I'd find it hard to get interested, considering the mpg displays are purposely "enhanced" by Toyota. Too, does it all vapourize if you disconnect the 12 volt? Maybe not, with 4th gen, it has some sort of flash drive?

Just do a spreadsheet, whatever interests you.

Good question, but I don't know the answer. Certainly, the ODO reading has to remain intact. Question is how much of other data stored are erased with 12V disconnected.

Yeah the ODO reading is my goto data point, for calculating mpg. It means an extra step in order to determine distance traveled (subtract previous ODO value from current), but is never compromised, by inadvertent trip meter reset, 12 volt disconnect. Or even for when someone borrows the car and puts $10 in: as long as they save the receipt, you can lump it in with the next fill up.

The odometer reading is somewhat akin to a "running dimension", a steel detailing expression, maybe common with carpenters as well? All linear dimensions along a beam, column (or board) are taken from a common datum, typically the left end of the piece.

So, with non-OEM size tire, does ODO still show accurate distance traveled? I know the speedometer is off. o_O

Ah why'd you have to open that can of worms, lol.

Getting back to my running dimension analogy: now the tape measure is made of rubber...

Depends. A different size than the OEM will throw it off, but different tire models of the same size can have different revs per mile. In the latter case, it would throw the odometer off, but likely not enough to notice until you get to 6 figures.

Salamander_King... Yes, I was talking about the monthlies in the MID you displayed. I swear it was dead-on accurate when I got the car, but now I'm second guessing myself. Eitherway, it's off by <1%... just annoying because of the spreadsheet I use to calculate use/expenditures.

OK, I have kept all of daily and monthly log data in my spreadsheet. As you now, the car keeps only up to 24 months (6 screens) of data and purge the older data as new data is generated. The calculated total miles from my record of monthly log up to this morning and the current ODO reading was:

TOTAL SUM of all miles from Monthly log: 37207 miles
    ODO reading: 37225 miles

Yap, ODO is showing 18 miles more. But that's only 0.048% off. Not even close to 1%. But still not exact match. I could check it again at the end of this month to see if there is any difference, but for 1000 miles driven/month 0.048% is only 0.48 miles, so it will not likely to show on the display. If I do two months, or drive more than 2000 miles, it may show ~1 miles discrepancy, assuming the rate of error stays the same. As I said, it could be rounding of daily values that may be causing this discrepancy. Or, ODO may have a few small miles registered before monthly log starts? Either way, the difference is so small, I would not worry about it.

Thats reassuring... yea, mine is off by ~0.6%. Negligible in my book. It probably is from rounding errors (1mi/month max?) That seems to fit the data.

    You mean 0.06%.
    13 / 21657 = 0.000600267811793
