Bigger question is how much maint was done along the way? what are the service records?, mine 2015V is in for 75k service have a leaking timing chain cover covered under warranty as I bought a CPO car (certified pre owned)..the mechanics say if you baby these engines they dont last also they need to be run up at RPM which I do, my 4runner has 230k on it and havent had any problems at all, i do proper maint though...

Certified Toyota dealer mechanics working on my car currently in the shop we also discussed the misfire issue and the rattling noise it makes and showed me the clutch and springs that rattle which was pretty cool..

I'm sceptical of the Italian tune-up theory. I'll take EGR and intake manifold cleaning, which the dealerships are loath to do. Do properly at least.

Having owned a few Ferrari and Lamborghini's in the past, the Italian carb balancing and running engines as they are meant to be run is very true have you owned any performance Italian cars? of course some italian cars are not always known for quality..... having cleaned enough EGR's in the past and intake manifold cleaning and flushing, injectors, etc... which the dealers are happy to do taking money out of your pocket, i tend to agree with the toyota certified mechanics....carbon buildup, is real...and under utilizing your engine properly is also real...these are low compression motors...

So what are you suppose to do? Red line the car every time you drive? I'm not a mechanic but one would think putting such high stress on a small engine like that will cause alot engine issues and shortening the life of the engine itself. You always hear stories of cab drivers/uber/lyft who use the Prius who rack up 200,000-400,000 miles and with alot of those miles, is usually city miles/stop and go traffic, sitting in traffic on interstates and so on. Just my two cents; I also had a Toyota Mechanic tell me that the "3rd Gen Prius doesn't have issues with the EGR clogging and said verbatim that I shouldn't believe anything thats on the message boards or anything that the so call internet experts say." This was right at my 120,000 mile scheduled maintenance. About 10k miles later, I did the full EGR cleaning and I'd say there was at least 10% blockage. So maybe not all Toyota mechanics know what they are talking about.

Flooring it will just generate more soot and cause oil burning - accelerating (no pun intended) the EGR clogging.

    Pixel XL ?
