My 2016 Prius cruise control does not operate in the way described at p. 318 of my manual:

"-Accelerating after setting the vehicle speed ...
    - Even without cancelling the cruise control, the set speed can be increased by first accelerating the vehicle to the desired speed and then pushing the lever down to set the new speed."

Instead, the cruise control just resumes the old set speed. This is dangerous, for example, when I am driving with cruise control set at 35 on city street, then accelerate on the freeway on-ramp to 70, push the lever down to Set, it just goes back to the 35 set speed. I have to then increase the speed 1 mph at a time by pushing the Up (+) continuously to increase set speed to 70, taking my eyes off the road to watch the set speed go up, slowly, to 70.
Is it broken? Do I need to give the dealer a lot of money to try to figure it out now that my 36 month warranty period has expired? Or am I doing something wrong?

    Did it ever work properly?

Cruise control won't set at anything below 46km/hr. Or re-engage at below 40km/hr.

Above that speed, if you want to set at the speed you're driving (eg you're driving at 85, while it's set for 50), pull the lever toward you (disengage) and then press down and it will set at that speed.

On the other hand, you've set it for 65km/hr AND DRIVING at 65, and you want to change that to 90km/hr, hold the lever up till it gets to 90 (in 5km/hr intervals after a second or so).

Be aware when using the stick in the down position with any traffic behind you. If you click it down a touch at a time your fine, but if you hold it down nothing happens for about 5 seconds, than a brake mode takes over until 28 mph.. That brake mode is like B mode on steroids until 28 mph when dynamic cruise shuts off.
The regular crusie control ( set on by holding the start cruise button in about 5 seconds) doesn't behave that way. And it's low limit is 25 mph (flaky, but can be set) or 26 mph seems to hold well.

Can't tell you if yours is faulty as there's no mention of this method in my UK handbook (or the old US manual AFAIK), it just mentions holding (for 5 mph increments) or dabbing (for 5 mph increments in UK or 1 mph increments US) the stalk up until the desired speed is indicated on the MFD.

You are doing this incorrectly, unless I’m not understanding something. Down on the lever sets the cruise speed, unless you already have cruise set. Then it lowers the speed the by 1.
For it to work as you expect, you need to pull the lever toward you after or as you speed up to disengage the cruise. The pulling down on the lever will set the new faster speed as your current speed.
I use cruise control all the time. I mean ALL THE TIME. On almost every road. I love the radar controlled cruise. It’s my absolute favorite feature. I’ll be hard pressed to buy a car in the future without it.

Well, my 2016 manual says the same thing, so I can see where the OP would be confused. It used to work this way in Gen 2 (the OP signature indicates 2007 Prius), so it must be something the editors missed in the new manual. The OP needs to change his habit, and Cancel the set speed before trying to set a new speed.
