Abs actuator repair.

    Some time ago, after pressing the brakes to slowly back out of my garage, I noticed slushy brakes and oily spots underneath both rear tires.

    So. Dash lights up abs. Even after I replaced the rear cylinders.

    Haven't bleed the brakes yet. I just received a beater laptop that still runs 7 so I can install tech stream on it and bleed.

    I have 3 questions:

    1) if i bleed correctly is it likely that the abs code will go away? Probably not.

    2) if it is the actuator, and it probably is. I think I've read here somewhere that there is a more problematic model than another. Which one should I buy? What is the correct part make, model etc.

    3) where can I buy said part without feeling violated?

    The videos are, for once, fairly straight forward.

    I find it laughable that there isnt a video on bleeding gen 2 rear prius brakes, but there is one on removing the actuator.

    Help me folks. I gotta get this done.

    How do both rear cylinders start leaking at the same time? That's whacky.

    It may not be the abs unit. Abs symptom is non stop brake assist vac motor continuously running since the abs unit when it fails it leaks vacuum.

    If you open up the brake lines or the cylinders leak it will throw that brake code as the system will detect loss of vac. At that point you must bleed the brakes and get the air out of the system and then clear the code.

    with your techstream you can do the brakes just like the dealer they use Techstream. You can actuate the proportion relays using techstream. There's hundreds of posts about brake maintenance here you just have to search for it.

    use the blue search forums tab up top and search brakes.

    Thats certainly the goal for this week.But, just to be prepared and since Christmas is coming I'd like to be able to tell the gf to buy an abs actuator if needed. Which one and where?

    Just so future readers won't be scratching their heads: the Prius brake system doesn't use vacuum, anywhere. The pump in a Prius is a positive pressure pump, that stores brake fluid into a pressurized gas cylinder.

    But the main point is sound: you have Techstream, so you can use it to get the trouble codes from the brake computer. At this point, you don't even know why it is showing you the dash lights, and that's the important thing to find out. It could be a reason entirely unrelated to the $$$ actuator, and you could end up not only spending money but creating new problems if you dive into that, relatively involved, replacement project when the problem is something else.

    parts.toyota.com can get you the part number of the actuator, if your gf is in a holiday spirit.
