Anyone know what this error is? I do know my 12v gets low from tjme to time and curious if that's it?

Or is it time to take it to the dealer for that sweet 150k mile warrenty?

Error is: Hybrid System Malfunction - Visit Your Dealer.

Check the obvious things - the vents under the back seat, and the filter. Are the fluid levels correct?

Since the error is specifically the hybrid system covered under that warranty I would say the dealer visit is likely the best option. Too much troubleshooting could lead them to say that tampering voided the warranty.

What are the codes that need to be triggered for them to warranty the battery? I do have a mini vci so I can check the codes given. If anyone has the specific codes needed, let me know, and then I can avoid the $100 fee my dealer requires just to check even warranty stuff(refunded if it's actually under warranty otherwise they don't).

"Hybrid System Malfunction" - doesn't mean hybrid battery. It could be the cooling fan (or filter) for the battery, the inverter, the inverter cooling system, a wiring problem or the computer. Or - the battery.

I suggested cleaning the filter - which is in the DIY of the Owner's Manual:

I believe the CA warranty covers more than just the battery. Perhaps @Raytheeagle or others in CA can verify.

We need the codes to know for sure;).

That message only tells you there is something else to investigate, which the dealer will be more than happy to do for a nominal hourly rate:cool:.

The code for a battery replacement is P0A80, but chances are it is something else:whistle:.

Once you can supply the codes, we can help with the next steps(y).

One question - did this MALFUNCTION occur when you were driving, stopped or starting the car?

Good chance it's something else other than battery - I just looked at the System Diagram - the Hybrid System ECU has about 55 inputs, sensors or assemblies it links with - one of which is the battery - and most I have no idea what they're referring to.

If you have access to Techstream, there will be additional codes, called INF codes there;).

    This narrows down the possibilities:).

    But requires the right tool:cool:.

Avoids the guess work we are left to otherwise(y).

Which sounds more like an ECU problem - but "could" mean that your Battery, Inverter, MGs etc are fine.

Did the MALFUNCTION go away, or still there? And did this MALFUNCTION occur when you were driving, stopped or starting the car?

Chance it might go away when the 12v is charged.

On a Prius usually once a 12v battery is bad enough to need jumping it needs to be replaced for reliable operation.

Depends - mine was flat after a "left the lights on" about 18 months ago. I left it an hour and it had recovered enough to start the car - and has been fine ever since.

If crazy codes result, the time has come to replace the 12 volt;).

I’d investigate why the 12 volt is getting drained to avoid a similar investment in the future:).

Good luck and keep us posted(y).

Lithium ion portable jumpstarters. Thankfully the days of using another car are long gone for me.

Why not? That's how you're supposed to do it.
