when grabbed if I'm carrying the keys. Which it seems to do. I'll make sure to check its locked but when I come back it just opens like it was left unlocked.
Could someone flesh out what is going on?
Does car sense "return of keys" by distance, or do keys in my pocket detect signal through my body sorta like how you can't make phone screen work with certain gloves, or what?
What are the parameters? How can an meek little 250+lb construction worker such as myself stop someone from shoving me aside when I approach my new Prius and hopping in for a bit of joyriding?
Is there a way to re-program so key button MUST be pressed to open and otherwise start car? What page of full 700pg owner's manual for 2020 Prime?

Carry the electronic key to enable these functions.
    ■ Front door handles
    Grip the driver’s door handle
    to unlock the door. Holding
    the driver’s door handle for
    approximately 2 seconds

On page 745 seems to say Smart Key may be disabled or switched by Dealer, but Smart Door unlocking is owner changable, to what exactly if its not same as "off", and how to access that on car's display.

    VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
Smart door unlocking* Driver’s door All the doors – O O
Smart key system On Off – – O
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Does that mean keep push buttons but lose automatic unlocking???

I believe the SMART KEY can be turned "OFF" - but the dealer will have to do it. Talk to your salesperson - hopefully they won't charge.

You'd then have to use your mechanical key. I think you can lock your car with the mechanical key anyway, which then means that the SMART KEY won't work - try it out.

The car is not unlocked until you grab hold of the handle.

Also the car cannot be started unless the key fob is actually inside the car - even if a joyrider did get in the car before you. If you are outside the car, it won't start.

Try it - after unlocking the car, you leave the key outside, the car will just display a message saying it can't locate the key.

    My 2017 doesn't have fold-in mirrors.

If I want to check whether it is locked I carefully pull on the handle without touching the part that senses whether you are touching the handle.

We don’t have auto folding mirrors. We don’t even have power folding mirrors. (Just manual folding)

:eek::eek::eek:. One of my favourite things - glance back, mirrors folded, secure.

Do you get it on the RAV4? It is here, but we don't get HUD. New Corolla SEDAN doesn't get folding mirrors though

    IF it is working right.
It is possible that one door is not locking properly, in which case NONE of them will stay locked.

Some additional testing is in order.
Sounds like a warranty visit to me.

If you wish the confirm that the doors are locked you can disable the key fob's RF by holding the "Lock" button down and then pressing the "Unlock" button twice. If you did this right the LED will flash 4 times. You can then grab the handle and check if its locked. Since this is my first car with a smart key system, I did this for the first week I had it and now I trust the system to be working.

I added power folding mirrors to my 2016 Prius 4. One of my favorite additions because of the “glance at the car to see if it is locked”.

No. No Toyota here has auto-folding mirrors (except for the 2019+ Corolla Hatch).

Maybe the Avalon had power folding mirrors but the last time I can remember seeing power folding mirrors was on a 1997 Corolla DX 1.8 with the "LE" package. (so essentially a Corolla 1.8 LE)

Maybe - the first one I ever saw was, I think on a PEUGEOT, and it also tilted them slightly downwards when engaging Reverse.

I don't really know. But if I lock with clicker, then check, door its locked. But when I come back it instantly unlocks. I'm guessing its a time-lock of few seconds and/or system reset after it sees key leave out of range then return.

I really wish Toyota would not be so coy with all these "magic" features, although they do seem about perfect for my actual use. Its like when they added a "count down" to CrossWalk lights it improved safety because people had better info to work with.

OMG, how? And do they only fold on their own? Did you add a button?
