One of my neighbor stole my key fob. I decided to buy a new key fob and wanted Toyota to reset the program so my lost key won’t be able to use it on my car. I went to Toyota today and he said my spare key wouldn’t work any more. Only the new one that I bought would work. Is this true? And what should I do if I want an extra key?

    thanks in advance

sounds right. the programming is in the ecu. i could be wrong, but i think they should be able to delete the old fob and reprogram it.

    maybe try some locksmith's.

Either you told them the wrong thing OR they misunderstood.
You should still be able to have TWO FOBs registered to the car.
You need to tell them that......and leave BOTH FOBs with the car.

That doesn't sound right - I know a MAZDA, only supplied with one key, they bought a replacement and now have the original and the replacement. I'd ring TOYOTA.

Did you have 2 fobs before the theft, or just 1 fob? I.e. did you have another fob to drive the car to the shop to have this work done?

From the posted shop work description, it seems that they deleted just one fob (not both factory fobs), and added one more. If this is true, and if you still have an old fob in your possession, it should still work. If it doesn't, then something doesn't match the shop's sheet.

The car should have the capacity to recognize a handful of fobs (5??) if you are willing to pay for that many.

Beware that the lost fob's mechanical key may still work to open the door, even if it can't start the car.

I don't understand, you seem to be asking if the fob you already have (not the new one or the lost one) will work, have you not tried it ? o_O

i think it doesn't work now that he had a new one programmed, and he wants to know if his old one can be reprogrammed to work again

There are 3 fobs. One got stolen, One can’t be used(old one) and the new one that they programmed. Just wonder if the old one can still work.... I’ll go to ask another Toyota dealership though

If done the way you really wanted it done, then the old fob that you still have, should still work, along with the new fob.

But if the tech did it wrong, or the shop misunderstood your work request, or you simply asked for the wrong service, then the old fob still in your possession may have been de-registered too. (Or worse, instead of the stolen fob.) In this case, the shop might need to try again to get what you really need.

Sounds like the tech reset the car to one fob. Leaving the non-functional one forgotten. Since the non-functional fob has already been set to your car, it should be simple to reregister it on the car side.

I'm not sure if it's the same with the Gen 4, but ISTR with the Gen 3 the tech has to de-register all the keys then reprogram them back in one by one. Sounds like he forgot, or didn't know how, to program the second (old) one.

    OK.
If I'm comprehending right (Questionable), you had your key fob stolen. You NEVER got it back. It's in someone elses possession

It's unknown or unclear whether you originally had 2 fobs. One for use, one back-up. BUT I'm ASSUMING 1 fob.
You got the vehicle to a dealership and purchased a new fob.
According to the paperwork shown, Old key was erased, new key added.

My speculation, assumption is that if you believe the tech, and dealership, the old "stolen" fob will no longer work. If you had a second back up fob? It should no longer work. You could test this IF you have one.

Since the original fob is now missing/stolen, what do you do but trust the paperwork? You've been told the old programming has been erased, and the new fob programmed.
You could have another dealership verify, or the whole thing reprogrammed again, but I have no reason to NOT believe the paperwork as presented.

see, i read it (twice now, post #1 and #8) one fob stolen, one fob retained, reprogram car so stolen fob won't work, which means retained fob won't work.
new fob programmed, dealer claims old retained fob cannot be reprogrammed.

o/p just hasn't spent enough time here over four days to clarify

That isn't how I read post #8. There are three fobs in this story.

    OK.
    That makes sense.
I would think, if the original programming was erased, and a new fob programmed, that would indeed keep the "old" fob from working. Whether the OP could now take the old fob, and have it reprogrammed as a "new twin" to the new fob?
I'm just going to say I'm not sure.

I don't understand why though - as I said in Post #4, my daughter's spare FOB kept working when she bought a new one. I reckon the Dealer is hoping to sell a 2nd FOB. I'd be ringing TOYOTA.

This Website indicates that "You can get a new code assigned to the existing FOB."

that thread looks right, $1,300.

when you buy a new fob, they program it to the old one.

when you have your old ones deleted, and program a new one, i'm not sure what the deal is. some programming is in the fob, and some is in the ecu.

on top of that, i think there are programming differences between gen 2 and 3.

The process is, as others have stated:
    1. All fobs are removed from the car in one operation
    2. All fobs must be present and are re-added to the car
So, if you didn't bring your spare key with you, they won't have been able to re-add it.

they told him the old one would not work anymore. but did they mean the one he had, or the one that got stolen?
    maybe try another dealer.

    the plot thickens...
