Do you change your oil every 5000 or 10000?

This thread is not to discuss which is better. There is already a sticky thread going on about it.
I am just curios myself. I have 2010 Prius III that I bought at 142k. It is now at 165k. I have been changing the oil (Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-20) and the filter (OEM) at every 5000miles.
I didn't know the Toyota officially revised the change interval to every 10000 miles. I saw the thread just a few months ago. And I was surprised to be honest.

My last oil change was in past October 19 (less then 3 months ago). It has been 5000 miles already. I normally go 6 months (about 1000miles per month). This time, it went by too fast because I have done two long-distance trips that claimed half of that 5000 miles. The other 2500 miles is for normal city commuting back and forth to work.

I wonder what my fellow Prius owners do for their oil change:)

P.S. My car doesn't burn any oil. The OCC collects just a little (2 ounces max.) at every oil change and it is not milky.

This fellow owner (and career Mechanic) changes his Prius oil/filter at 5,000 miles using Toyota 0w-20 synthetic and Toyota filter.

Okay, split the difference, 7500 miles. :)
I do 10,000. Just did mine at 190,000. It was just starting to get dark.

5k for me. My last sampling at 5k showed “possible” coolant contamination, just enough to be detected. They recommended another sample done at 5k to rule it out. I haven’t lost any coolant that I could tell, so I’ll see what happens in about 1200 miles.

I seem to remember the announcement coming out in late 2009.

I typically change the oil at some convenient time somewhere in the middle of those mileage ranges. No simultaneous tire rotations, I do that with my winter/summer tire and wheel swaps.

For third gen Toyota Canada stuck with 6 months or 8000 kms (5000 miles), whichever comes first. I follow that, and we're lucky to do 8000 kms yearly, so 6 months governs.

With fourth gen Toyota Canada's switched to be in line with the States, the longer intervals, but I would stick with the old interval. Maybe overkill; I don't care.

In Europe we have the 15k km (~10k miles) for most of the Toyotas since around 2000, so I don’t change it more often.

If they announced it in 2009, how come all the Gen3 cars have 5k-mile interval programmed on the on-board computer?

Or was it for 2010 models only not the later Gen3s?

5k maintenance, does not necessarily mean oil and filter.

it matches your maintenance schedule, every 5k or 6 months, whichever comes first

Reminders for tire rotations and other maintenance / inspections. Although some feel that if a shop changed their engine oil, they don't need to check it at all until it's in the shop for next oil change. See my signature for more info.

So that you don't forget the other maintenance items that still need attention at that interval, including checking the oil level. Here is the 2012 Liftback's list:

Himmm… Though the computer specifically says "Oil Maintenance Required", Maybe something like "5000mile Maintenance Required" would look better. But I see why Toyota didn't change the interval to 10000 now.
This also reminds me that I need to rotate the tires. :)

Up north here, tire rotation is 'free' when doing my winter tire swaps, but costs me extra labor any other time. So that is why I've separated it from the oil changes and do it at a different time.

But this plan isn't useful in Florida ...

It always puzzles me to see how different maintenance schedules are on different sides of the Atlantic ocean.
Since a very long time Toyota has a 15000km (9375 miles) service interval.
Toyota has the shortest intervals since most European and also other Asian brands use 20000 or 30000km intervals.
