Advice requested for 2010

    Hi Gang,

    I have a 2010 with nearly 205k miles. I purchased the Prius from its original owner in early 2013 with 11k miles on it. The only non-maintenance repairs I have had are the left front and right rear wheel bearings recently replaced. Other than this, the car has been reliable and I have followed the factory recommended maintenance plan.

    Recently, it has started to use a bit of oil. 1,700 miles after my last oil change, the dipstick is reading right in the middle of the 2 dots, so about 3/4 of a quart low. Over the past 4 months, I have also noticed a decline in MPG likely due to a decline in the traction battery (getting about 40MPG now compared to 45-46 MPG last year at this time).

    I'm contemplating putting some money into the vehicle to replace the traction battery and upgrade the audio to an Apple Car Play compatible head unit. At the end of the day, its cheaper than a car payment (if I would buy a new one) for a car I enjoy and have no problems with keeping. My only concern with this plan is the oil usage. From what I've read, the 2010's have many issues with oil consumption and blown head gaskets.

    My question for those reading is simple, would you invest a few more thousand into a vehicle as I described or bite the bullet on a newer model? I have a long commute and put about 30k annually on the vehicle. Any and all input is appreciated, thank you.

    You could replace the head gasket before it goes.
    While the head is off, you could remove the pistons and clean the rings. And hone out the cylinders.
    New valve guide seals would be a good idea also.
    Why do you say the battery is going? Have you tested it? You could get the Prolong Battery charger/discharger to
    extend the life of the battery.
    Remember, the car is paid for. And IS cheaper than a new car. Car payments, higher insurance payments....
    Which is most cost effective for you?

    I'd suggest a new(er) vehicle.

    A high mileage GenIII is a good car for an automotive hobbyist / mechanic. It's going to wear on the patience and checkbook of the person who just wants reliable transportation.

    With that many miles, traction battery going out the door, and this carplay gimmick, I'd trade it in and get a camry or corolla. The cost of engine replacement to be & traction battery will get you a used car already.

    ...me too...WHEN this one becomes unreliable.

    Until then I believe that I would do some maintenance on the 2010 and roll the dice a few more times.

    Otherwise?
    You’ll just be depreciating a newer car..
