I don't think the gas mileage savings would amount to much if I drive 4-5k miles a year.
Now I'm kind of confused. I thank you for your replies.
I kind of feel like I bit off more than I can chew with this Prius. I may end up getting a different car.

yeah, that's generally why people buy them, mpg's and/or low emissions.

hate to see you take a big hit on trade, i guess you'd have to weigh it against the potential cost of a battery

If I bought a new battery in 2-3 years if it needs one, are you saying the car will no longer be reliable when it gets 15 years old and older?

There are many antique cars and classic cars still alive, mostly garage kept or what have you.

Salted roads will rust out a car, and you can prolong it, and help to prevent it but it is inevitable.

So not sure if you live in area where they salt the roads, but if not, the cars age will grow more
as more maintenance is done to it. eventually it will be either too much work for repairs
or too much comparable to your worth.

It's hard to make predictions when no Prius c is more than 9 years old right now. I'm sure somebody will keep one going 20 years, we just can't guess what he/she is going to go through pulling it off.

At some point the car depreciates down to less than the cost of any repair. This happens to every car. It's just that certain Prius repairs are more expensive, thus presenting economic "failure" earlier than a car known for cheaper repairs.

if you buy a new battery, you should get another 8-? years out of it, just like the original

Also let's keep it in perspective- congrats, you got away from a Fiesta, possibly with the Powershift-6 transmission that keeps blowing up.

And get reliable performance from the Prius for 8 more years and not have to make expensive repairs if I keep up with oil and filter changes? The way some of you sounded it would start falling apart sometime after the new battery installation.

My Fiesta was a 2016 and never had transmission trouble. I know 2 people who have 2012 Fiestas with AT. One of them has 150k on it and never had any trouble with it. He loves the car. The other one had the tranny replaced by Ford at no cost several yrs ago and it's been fine ever since and she speaks well of her car.

You'll have to keep up with regular maintenance like any car. As it gets older you'll need to keep an eye on breaks, struts, water pump, and coolant / transmission fluid changes. I think if you just set aside a little bit of money every month just for potential car care, you shouldn't have to worry about troubles. And follow the Toyota maintenance schedule for your vehicle. As others have said, the Prius C's are known to be incredibly reliable so I think you should just drive and enjoy it.

But definitely find the Toyota maintenance schedule and bookmark it for reference.

You might want to look into the Dr. Prius app. (priusapp dot com). It's an inexpensive way to test your hybrid battery for it's remaining life. The basic app for your phone is free. There is an add on module needed to do the test that is less than $10.00. You'll also need an OBD II connector that can be had for around $10.00 - $12.00. The app's developer recommends some at his website. There's little you can do to get around the high cost of replacing the battery with a new one, but at least after the test you will know where you stand.

I recently tested my 2012 C with 131,000 miles and was pleased to see it had 84.9% life remaining.

You have purchased a very reliable car. Good luck with it.

I hope I haven't brought you too much concern. I guess my overall point is that there are relatively few 15-20 year old cars of any kind still on the road, and the sophistication of the Prius won't do it any favors on the long timescale. The phenomenal build quality will help balance this, but we won't know until then.

You just have to be realistic about that, and I'm sorry if I'm coming off as too much cold water right when you're celebrating new-to-you wheels. You've still bought a very reliable car, you just know more details now.

Regarding the Fiesta- I'm not in total disparagement. I've rented a couple of them in the past year and rather enjoyed the way they drove. On the other hand, the Detroit Free Press' recent report made the transmission problem sound like a severe and common issue. I'm glad you did well with it.

'on average', prius is one of the most reliable cars on the road. but no one can guarantee that you won't have an expensive repair somewhere down the line.

you can really only look at your odds. mechanical things wear out and break sometimes.

That's interesting. I'm one of the few left who don't ow n a cell phone. I have a desktop PC and an Amazon Fire tablet and a wired VoIP phone. That said, I should be able to get my battery life tested at a NAPA store, a Toyota dealer, or something.

Thanks for all of your replies. The car runs great and was well maintained and the way I baby my cars I wouldn't be surprised if it held up very well for many more years. I can do a once a year oil change with 0w20 full synthetic oil.

I was looking at cars today, thinking I'd trade the Prius in or sell it outright, then when I drove the car home I remembered how nicely it drives and handles. I don't think I'll end up selling or trading it. I spoke to a man who once worked for Toyota and he said in all his years working for them, he never saw one Prius battery fail. And he was trying to sell me a used Corolla but he still told me that.
Then I went on youtube and searched "prius longevity" and saw some interesting videos. I saw 2 or 3 men who work or worked for Toyota say that they've only seen a few Prius hybrid batteries fail and most of them were under warranty.

I actually traded in a 2016 Ford Fiesta with 59k miles on it for this Prius, plus about $1370. Some people think I was nuts to trade for an older car with more miles but to each his own. I did it and I can't go back and change it now. My trade in value went from $6500 down to about $3500-$4000. I felt a bit put off by this and was going to sell it outright just to try to make up for the loss in my trade in value. But the car runs so nicely and handles so good that I don't think I could part with it.

I will learn how to clean the battery cooling fan soon, though it was serviced by Toyota so many times that it's probably pretty clean around there.

On the CARFAX, it says they changed the transmission fluid at 37,670 miles. At 40,035 miles, the computer was reprogrammed. Evidently the car had a warranty that covered all this service or an owner who didn't worry much about paying every 5 to 10k miles for all these services.
They seem to have replaced license plate bulbs 3 times on the car but the 2nd owner didn't replace them in the 2 or 3 services he got at the same Toyota dealer.

I live in upper East Tennessee and cars don't usually rust much around here as a rule plus I usually rinse it off after driving it on wet roads. I keep my car in my unheated garage most of the time.

I drove it 15 miles South of here today on the highway. Such a great handling car. I think I'm in love.
