Hi all, my 05 Prius has 185k miles, it's managed just fine with no problems recently. In the last few days, I noticed an odd noise. When I'm gaining speed from 0mph, my car makes a deep sound if I go above 2500RPM. When I'm at cruising speed (40-60mph), it doesn't make the deep sound unless I go above 3k. It isn't a bad noise, but it definitely hasn't done this forever.

Anyone heard of a deep noise when accelerating? Anything I can do to check it and ensure everything is healthy? I'm up to date with oil changes and haven't had any codes come up except for P0420 which has been there for two years now.

How are you measuring the RPM?

It may be because the hybrid battery is getting tired and now the engine is supplying most of the power and you have to push the pedal harder to achieve speed. It happens so gradually you may not notice it.

And then because the engine is straining so much it's starting to complain. Have you checked the engine oil level?

Whats the deal with the hybrid battery is it rebuilt or the original?

Does it do that if the car is not moving and the engine is rev'd?

Wheel bearings wear out eventually, and the sound it makes is usually speed dependent, at least initially.
