i hope you have more than $900., but either way, stay away from hybrids, they are very expensive to fix, and not many mechanics understand them. you wind up at the dealer, financing their yacht payments.
look around for a corolla/matrix/mx3/civic/etc

 

This is a great price for a Prius and if you have basic tools and and an interest to learn, this website can help you fix anything that goes wrong with a Prius. But if you have no interest in do it yourself repair work, then you'll need to keep saving up for a nicer car.

The P1116 isn't that hard to work on... If you do a internet search with that code and keyword Priuschat you'll find lots of reading about how to do the repairs/diagnosis.

 

Kind of a tough call.
Because my feeling is, at less than $1000? You're going to be hard pressed to find any used vehicle in that price range that is going to offer too much peace of mind concerning potential repair.
You're taking a long shot gamble with anything you buy in that price range.

Then really my advice is....save up more money. So you can buy something better, be it Prius or otherwise.
When I was very young, first trying to get a car, I got in a cycle of looking for low cost deals.
This was decades ago, but almost everything I bought for less than $1000 turned into a nightmare. I eventually simply resigned to riding my bicycle and public transportation UNTIL I could afford something decent. Because I was in a bad cycle of saving up about $1000...then losing some percentage of it in a bad deal.
It was better when it all just went to savings...until I had enough to get something worth having.

You can luck in, and get something with life left at less than $1000, but it does take luck. Unless you have a family member that is just selling you a vehicle at a good price to be nice.

Otherwise, I say pass...because really NOTHING for less than a $1000 is likely to be a very good vehicle given the parameter of your situation.

I would recommend to consult professional mechanic perhaps one of the mobile mechanics in your area. I have personally dealt with similar situation but with a newer hybrid Lexus and it was great to have someone on my side who knows about the vehicle and can see and talk to the vehicle computers to interrogate the system.
I personally have used EV HYBRID TECH for $200 that resulted in $700 price negotiation for possible battery issues.
Those guys are mobile in Los Angeles and are approved repair dealer who issues invoices and can be tracked down.
