Pre-Collision Braking Almost Killed Me Today

1/2 to 2 miles per hour, I’d guess.

 

I presume that this is ICS (the ultrasonic sensors) doing this, since PCS’ radar is strictly forward-looking. That bad wing the case, I presume this phenomenon would only be observed on the Advanced- (or Limited- in 2020 parlance) trim-level Primes.

Is yours of this ... persuasion?

 

My increasing age (having turned 59 today!), and my work requiring me to drive 19 miles to work and 19 back home each day, convinced me that our 2009 Prius was not adequate.

Even though I’ve never had an accident (in which any even slight damage occurred) in 43 years of driving, my age and TSSP were strong reasons to buy our 2017 P.Prime. I have no regrets about that decision nearly 3 years later!

 

The way it works is that no one has an accident until they have their first accident.

When an accident happens, it usually happens in the least expected place and time.

 

You really don't know what happened because it was dark. It could be a cat or a dog that darted in front of the car, even a pedestrian lurking. This is the first time I heard about the car braking for a ghost. I doubt they will find anything justifiable with your complaint to NHTSA. You'll also lose the possession of your car for a few days when the Toyota engineers come to drive it for 150 miles.

My worry is the opposite that the system won't work when it's needed.

 

Yip.... Point being, even though I have good driving history, as I get older, my risks go up. So, I’m very glad to have PCS, ICS, and TSSP in general on the job for me, even though those systems aren’t flawless. They may in fact have already saved me from a few accidents, albeit (so far!) only minor ones.

 

I was slowly approaching the wall ... Probably 2-3 mph... automatic brake was applied when the car was around 10-15 cm away from the wall.

 

I have a 2017 Advanced model.

 

Doesn't the radio mute and and alert beep with auto braking is engaged?

 

I havent had quite this scenario, but I have had the car suddenly decelerate when passing a semi from the cruise being engaged. The semi did not cross the line but something triggered the adaptive cruise to think it needed to drop 30 mph.

This is one of many reasons I also have a dash cam, in fact a 2-channel so it captures what happens behind me too. Cheap liability insurance, I say.

With regards to this topic, I have had the emergency braking kick in once very briefly on my 2014 PiP (in 3.5 years and 130k KM of driving). it didn’t actually get to apply brakes, thought it did beep crazily and flash BRAKE! on the MID, and felt the seatbelt retract, but it was only for a split second then it went away. There was road construction where I was with steel road plates and it seemed to get a random reflection of the radar triggering the emergency situation but the car immediately dismissed it. Nice to see the technology work though, I never knew before then that it would retract the seatbelts...

Is it possible the OP was driving through construction and something similar happened, but more extreme?

 

While Boeing doesn't normally do this, aside from the current 737 MAX fiasco, Airbus does this as a standard practice. And apparently usually quite successfully now, after some earlier teething problems.

 

The whole point of the automatic emergency braking is that it happens in a split second, where a human being is not capable of responding. Taking control of that would defeat its entire purpose.

An at attentive human being can, however, constantly monitor a situation to the point that almost always, there will be no need of a situation where automatic braking needs to be activated.

The vehicle equipped with automatic emergency braking can be a negative for those who depended on it in place of being an attentive driver. Such has happened with the Tesla auto-pilot.

The same has happened in the aviation world with the computerized cockpit in the aviation world.

I am young now, but let's say my next hybrid is Toyota vechicle. By the time that car is 10 years I could be 80 unless I get a new one sooner than later.

 

Was the red light mounted down low? The car likely thought it was a brake light in front of you.

 

Not necessarily. Computers and sensors can see and respond better and faster than humans.

As far as I know, Tesla Autopilot accidents happened because the drivers misused the system as autonomous driving, which Tesla explicitly says it isn't. They will make autonomous driving (not the Autopilot) available soon though, which will remain to be seen.

As for the Boeing 737 Max, it is a multitude of design/hardware/software issues. I think the Boeing 737 Max program will eventually be scrapped for good, but we'll see. I say sell your Boeing stocks while you can.
