    hi guys!

long time lurker, first time poster here. my mom has driven her 05 prius with the check engine light coming on and off for about a year now, and last week it gave her the red triangle and "Problem" indicator. i plugged in my OBD scanner, and it gave me the P1116 and P1121 error codes, so i bought a new coolant control valve and replaced the original.

after bleeding and replacing the original coolant (car is at about 130k miles), every time i turn the car on now, this constant cycling sound can be heard coming from what appears to be the new coolant control valve.

if i clear the codes, the problem indicator reappears minutes after starting the engine, and the noise persists.

the original coolant was drained from the valve underneath the driver side fender, and refilled from the radiator neck. i ran the car in maintenance mode while squeezing the radiator hoses to get fluid moving through the system, with the radiator cap off and the radiator bleed valve open (no coolant ever came out). i have not been able to add any more coolant, and when jumping the pump, i get a reading of 3.6 to 3.7 amps. cabin heat works fine.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

There may be other issues with the car that's not being picked up by your code reader. The Prius needs a reader that can read all the computer codes, not just engine codes (probably the one you have).

A bad 3 way coolant valve won't light up your dash like that, when it fails, it will only light up the check engine light.

So you have other problems you have to look at, a proper code reader will be needed.

    i appreciate the response.

will buy a new reader and see what it spits out. any idea what is causing that noise, though?

A cycling noise (Like a broken CD trying to load) is usually associated with a bad 3 way coolant valve. If you want to pinpoint the sound, it would be a faint noise in the cabin, but if you pop open the hood, you'll hear it much louder in the center engine area.

But as mentioned before, this valve only gives you a check engine light when it goes bad. If the light goes on and off...that's usually not a valve problem. These problems will make that light stay on. A bad catalytic converter usually will make the check engine light go on and off randomly.

But from your pictures, you have other issues. In a 2005 model, you could have many electrical issues (the common ones I'll list).

    1. Bad hybrid battery
    2. Bad inverter pump
    3. Bad brake actuator.

All of these problems will show with a proper code reader.

    thanks again for the reply.

do you have any recommendations for a reader that can pull the codes? not sure what to look for on amazon.

Amazon or Ebay will have a MiniVCI cable with techstream software. It's probably under $25 and it runs off your laptop computer.
