In Canada we bridge the two systems: metric in principle, imperial in practice. Straddling the two systems you're in constant danger of groin pull.

The oddest I ever had was my '73 VOLVO, it had some nuts Metric, some AF (or was it Whitworth?), and even some SAE.

I was told that some depended on the supplier - I think anything by BOSCH was Metric - that was a LONG time ago, the mind is fuzzy with details.

I was on a job, an amusement/theme park ride, where there initially were four metric bolt connections on the entire job, the connection of the main component to our support. Due to that an entire existing imperial job had to be redone in metric, client policy.

I lived in Canada during the metric conversion. I wonder why it was halted?

A number of years ago Pitney Bowes decided to produce a photocopier based on a product from a Dutch company. The copier was produced in the US. It was half metric and half Imperial parts. That made servicing it challenging.

sorry for waking up such a old thread but I want to check, if replacing ac control unit with european one would change displayed units - can you help me with finding ac control unit location? Where to look for it pls - and if anyone tried it before, please let me know and save me some work! :)

Are you referring to a 2002 Gen 1 PRIUS?

To my knowledge nobody has converted an early Gen 4 to be able to switch units. Perhaps somebody could compare part numbers between early and late 2016 models.

hold my beer... just kidding:) Sooo - do you know the location of ac control unit? I know part number - 88650-47510

And another question - where the units are coded to - ac panel, ac control unit or main control unit?

Did you read post 6 in this thread? That is someone who actually looked at Toyota's documentation in addition to their experience.

There are three temperature readouts visible to the driver: the outside temperature on the main display of the combination meter; the set point in the air conditioning system display mode of the multi-information display of the combination meter; and the set point on the air conditioning control assembly.

The rest of this posting discusses only the last of these; as @Prodigyplace kindly reminds, I discussed the first one in post #6.
As the Repair Manual (more info) and New Car Features explain, the electronic control unit for the air conditioning system is called the air conditioning amplifier assembly, and the control panel with buttons and display is called the air conditioning control assembly. The amplifier assembly is located inside the instrument panel, but replacing it is unlikely to help, because...
...that same part number applies to amplifier assemblies used on U.S. and European models, so I doubt anything inside it determines the display units for the temperature.

The control assembly is different (55900-47190 or -47191 for U.S. models; 55900-47220 or -47221 for left-hand drive European models), but it’s not clear to me whether the differences are in the button labels and layout only, nor whether replacing the control assembly would change the displayed units.
The general architecture appears to be similar to that of third-generation Prius cars, in which the control assembly is a fairly simple device with a LIN bus connection to the amplifier assembly.

Toyota doesn’t say exactly how the unit selection works—the information isn’t needed for servicing—but in the fourth-generation Repair Manual, under Vehicle Interior: Heating/Air Conditioning: Air Conditioning System: System Diagram, they do mention that the main body ECU sends a “Destination symbol signal” and “Destination package signal” to the amplifier assembly. “Destination” here means destination country or sales area, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the amplifier assembly uses this information to determine the temperature units.

If you try replacing the control assembly anyway, please do let us know whether the units change.

    Toyota never released that information.
