King County toll has now risen to 5 dead, of 14 total cases. That makes 17 cases statewide.

All the new deaths appear to be from the LifeCare nursing home outbreak.

From local news pages during a news conference. The county Public Health page not yet updated today.

    ===================
P.S. "In addition, a patient from Snohomish County has died, bringing the total deaths in the state to six."

Just received the update be email (King County only, not including adjacent Snohomish County):

"Public Health confirms four new COVID-19 cases, bringing overall total to 14

Public Health – Seattle & King County announced on Monday four additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 in King County residents, bringing the total of confirmed cases to fourteen. King County Executive Dow Constantine signed an Emergency Declaration, enabling county government to take extra steps to fight COVID-19. Among the first actions: purchasing a motel and setting up modular housing units on publicly-owned parking lots and other available land."

This area does have a huge volume of contact all around the Pacific Rim.

I'm thinking the surge is likely related to the ramping up of testing, which was long suppressed by the CDC to a quite narrow definition of who should be tested (effectively, only suspects with "WUHAN" or "Diamond Princess" stamped on their foreheads could be tested), plus the snafus around the early test kits. Suspicious doctors just couldn't get other patients tested. These effectively precluded any detection of possible 'community spread'.

There are some indicators that community spread here began six-ish weeks ago. That would suggest that it is already spreading in the wild through the U.S., just wait until the testing capacity catches up.

The shitstorm is getting real in San Antonio. Imagine that you just been released from the hospital. What is the first thing you're going to do? Yes go to a f****** mall. Yes it's true. North Star Mall in San Antonio is now been shut down because the released-person went to the busiest spot in Metropolis.

What patient doesn't get a medical briefing, especially if they are still being monitored? . Shouldn't they have been on a slightly more cautious approach, maybe brief your patients that they should limit exposure for the time being?

This is the sort of proof that makes me a conspiracy theorist. Either the medical staff has no Common Sense or the 'patient' is doing it on purpose. Why is their first day out of isolation straight into a crowd of thousands? Seems like evil intent, IMO.

You're assuming the person wasn't told to avoid crowds and public places.

I am sure they were, because they were still being tested and monitored. They would not have been released without a briefing to that effect.

The patient was released after they came back with 2 negative results (but was still being tested). That patient then went out in public, but results came back positive on a 3rd test. Now they are back in isolation.

It begs the question of who is making decisions at the medical facility. If a patient is still being actively monitored, there are precautions they are advised to follow.

That patient just gave the middle finger to the 2 countries responsible for saving their life.

Data continues to imply COVID-19 got to the U.S. many weeks ago by multiple individuals not directly connected to each other and on different incoming travel pathways. Current COVID-19+ minuscule tested denominator count plus vast majority non-tested is likely into the many thousands, probably 10k+ at this point.

Again, the upside news is that the death rate is likely no worse than the seasonal flu across the whole population. Good for those not of advanced age and otherwise healthy. May be able to get a better handle on general demographic and sub-demographic numbers (ages/comorbidities) if/when we get this denominator thing figured out with testing of asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic folks who are most likely the ones spreading this thing around everywhere.

The largest potential looming problem at this point in the U.S. is the ability to put large numbers of non-DNR, advanced age patients on ventilators. The typical influenza season keeps these machines and staff busy enough.

i imagine there must have been infected people leaving china before they decided they had to admit they had a problem, and no way for the incoming countries to know anything.

The question I have is how can the test come back negative twice, but positive a third time?

With the long incubation period, infected could have been leaving the country before China knew there was a problem.

possibly the most political, non scientific interview i have ever read with a medical 'professional'.

julie belluz: there were reports from china about collateral damage, such as hiv patients not getting treatment in time due to travel restrictions and lockdowns.

bruce aylward: china took a whole bunch of steps when they realized they had to repurpose big chunks of their hospitals.
the first thing they said is, testing is free, treatment is free. the other thing they did was increase prescription from 30 to 90 days, and they set up a delivery system for prescriptions.

say what? and she doesn't even go back at him, but changes the subject. talk about softballs.

Looking pretty stable in the u.s., with most from returning travelers.

As one of our own is wont to say, A nothing burger?

I thought we’d see more by now with the change in protocol, perhaps it’s too soon
