Toyota wanted $300 more for half the job.

    I needed at the least 1(one) front wheel bearing/hub. Toyota hit me for $77 and change to verify that. Thanks. The estimate they layed on me was almost $800 otd. for just 1(one) side. The part was $241. What the hey? Anyway ... being the hard-core UNION guy that I am I considered that quote for a good 10-15 seconds.

    As it turned out ... I got two(2) bearing hubs at $63.79 ea. and had it done at a place by my house called "Gus's" . ... I left the car there on Monday morning and picked it up that afternoon. ... $340. BOTH SIDES.

    Toyota wanted $450/labor for just one(1) side. Like I said ... I'm a UNION guy but NO WAY could I afford that. I do feel a little bit sorry though.

    That is the Prius rate since they list out on maintenance profit from a regular vehicle.

    Toyota wheel bearings are very expensive. There is aftermarket wheel bearings. BUT this is a big but. The very cheap wheel bearings lack the ability to protect the speed sensor. This is not very critical on front if it is an external sensor.

    Rear bearings I believe have internal sensors. So going with a cheaper front bearing is ok.

    Should be ok they are a name brand. But don't skimp on rears or you'll be doing them again in 20k miles. Since the really cheap ones will just melt the sensors. I did that then when they melted I went to local O'Reilly's to get them just for warranty purposes. Easer to return to local place.

    I'm sure the parts are good. The books I checked and one really good guy I asked claimed it to be a three(3) hour job. I watched videos of it and it all seamed easy enough until the serious beating out of the part. When I saw the old parts I could understand the difficulty.

    I would very seriously suggest doing a break job at the same time if you can because it's all ready off and in front of you. Mine were still at +50% so I let it go.

    What is the UNION connection in this scenario, and why would you feel sorry for Toyota, do they advertise as being a UNION shop?

    Or was it about being a UNION worker, and still not making enough money to piss it away at a unionized dealership?

    The Toyota price should include a one (1) year warranty on parts and labor, which you may not find elsewhere. Please report back if you have an aftermarket wheel bearing failure, as some the higher end options/brands (Timken, SKF, MOOG) are failing.

    Many people go over 90,000 with less than 30% wear on rotors & pads. It just turns on how well one anticipates stopping, weather via traffic in front of us braking, or the next red light. Easy Breaking let's the regenerative capability stave off premature wear.

    Why are you taking a 2005 car into a dealership for repair in 2020?

    None of the other details matter, you were already daring the universe to kick your a##.

    I'm a UNION guy ... for a long time. Since you asked I did a little research on UNIONS and Toyota. As it is ... Toyota is not a regular UNION company. More Toyota shops are not than are. Actually very few are. I was going with the now shown inaccurate idea that $150/hr labor cost would not come from a non-UNION shop. I felt sorry for Toyota about 10-seconds that I took my business for a car I bought from them somewhere else. ... Maybe go look up the idea of "conversational rhetoric". That's the direction I was going.

    I'm a believer that the best economic times of our country for the middle-class was post war '50's. Where people earned good honest livings that supported nice average families. UNIONS were strong, The economy actually grew for everyone. Rich people paid their taxes. And did I say ... UNIONS were strong.

    I have NO worries that the parts I bought will fail ... in the same thought that the Toyota part is any better.

    I went to Toyota just for the general principles of getting a price and giving them a shot at my business. As I said before ... I saw some vids on the job. Whereas it is all easy enough to get done ... I didn't want to go through the last part of pounding the bearing/hub out. I also wanted my car back on the road a lot faster than if I would have done the job. YES ... I could have done it myself ... I just chose not to.

    They also charge $500 to replace hv battery which is totally under an hour to replace if you have done it before

    Maybe they screwed up the brake reassembly, and you had dragging brakes??

    I think keeping tire pressures close to spec and coming to a dead-crawl over speed bumps helps too.

    best to not be pounding around spindle surfaces that could easily get marred. Harbor Freight likely sells hydraulic pullers on the cheap nowadays. Right tool for the right job.

    They would be me. And no cheap bearings just lack the heat shield needed. I've cut them apart in the past.
