I might end up having to replace the cells in my HV battery in a gen 2 Prius.

I'm curious to know if there are any good, reputable websites that sell cells at an affordable price.

I've looked on eBay and they seem to range from 19.99-30 bucks each.

If you had to replace the cells in your HV battery, where would you go?

There are six cells in a module and 28 modules in a Gen 2 pack... You can't replace individual cells, only modules... And one of my first and worst moments was replacing a bad module with one from ebay that failed after 3 miles. So you want to buy good ones. Many people buy from HybridAutomotive.com I buy from a college professor in Oregon who teaches hybrid car repair and has $30K in diagnostic gear. They are always really good modules. His website: Hybrid Battery Conditioning | Reconditioned Hybrid Car Batteries Service- 2nd Life Battery or on ebay: 2ndlifebattery on eBay

He won't sell you the modules if you want to do it yourself?

Other than that he's got the best price to warranty I've seen

They ONLY sell things to do it yourself, including the Prolong reconditioning system.

I am sure that is their lawyers / insurance company talking. They do not want to be sued if you electrocute yourself or start a fire.

Doing a battery pack repair requires matching cells and their State Of Charge. IF you want to keep the car, do it right. If you just want to clear the code and let the next owner deal with it, ethics comes to mind.

I actually talked with that professor vis email today. They actually just ship them to you and I'm assuming the previous response about lawyers and such was correct. Just covering himself legally basically.

What I'm going to do is this.

If the guy who originally changed the battery honors the repair have him do that but be ready to get a replacement pack from this professor in OR.

His warranty and price can't be beat. I'll end up doing it myself and be done with it.

Still in the car for less than 3 grand.

I've invested too much time into this project to just let it die.

Also I'd never sell someone a car with something major wrong with it like this. That's wrong and I've had it happen to me before. Not going down that road.

How did you make out with your HV battery?

    Sure

So I went with 2nd life batteries

    Joe was super nice

There was an issue with my modules and I got like 12 of another guy's and he got 13 of mine

After he figured out what happened he credited me back 50 bucks

    Making my total investment 1050

He even held off on the core charge taking me on my word I'd send back the old modules and bus bars... Which I did and he laid for shipping

I replaced the HV battery and a few miles in got a master warning signal for a P0A84 (cooling fan)

Connector for the cooling fan was heavily corroded so I spliced the wires

I also cleaned the fan during the HV battery installation.

I have put about 700 miles on the car and am on my 2nd tank

My first tank I went 444 Mike's and averaged 50.4 mpg

My current tank I am averaging 52.4 mpg and am just under a half tank for this full up

Joe offers a 1-3 year warranty which is transferrable to one additional person if you decide to sell the car

    Very pleased this far

$1050 you were probably close enough to get a new kit from him, wouldn't that make more sense?

Except for the fact I believe @2k1Toaster has no stock right now. There is some little "thing" going on in China.

    Well that's all in man

Shipping, core charge the whole shabang

New modules would probably be 1600 before shipping and such

I paid 1900 for the entire car

My logic was don't pay more for the battery than the car

However in retrospect I'd have probably gone with the newer style cells and brand new

However I don't regret this at all

    Cars running great without issue

All you can ask for when chasing those high mpgs!

Actually when they were last in stock the kit was $1600 including shipping anywhere in continental US and you were free to sell your old modules to reduce your cost further.

    Didn't think of that

Wasn't aware of that at the time

    Don't care now

$1900 for the car is a great price assuming the car was in half decent shape.

Rusted fender and paint needed isn't what I would consider decent shape but that makes sense why you got it for $1900. Mine needs the hood and roof painted because the clear coat is faded but no rust.
