Think my 12V Battery is dead, Best deal on a new one?

    Hey guys,

    Have a 07 Prius Touring with 127k on her and the car would not start today and got an error saying something about the transmission on the display and numerous other warning lights were on. I jumped the car and let it sit for a few minutes off the 4 runner and got it running. Drove it home to let it charge a bit and seems to be fine but I did notice the big red traingle with the exclamation mark but when I scanned the codes there was nothing there on the OBD2 scanner. Is this just an old 12v battery? I have no clue how old it is. Finally money is a bit tight right now, got any suggestions on other than the $230 factory one from toyota?

    Also could trickle charging the battery help or avid a battery replacement?

    I am considering the Napa brand as it is $175 and they will have a 30% off coupon next weekend. It comes with a 2 year warranty full replacement and then 3 years after that prorated

    You can have the 12v tested/charged at a local auto parts store, or just purchase a new battery if it hasn't been replaced recently.

    No way to know without testing.

    If you wayto throw a hundred and fifty at it to see what happens, go for it, that’s a good battery

    This is the battery I was looking at online. Tehy acutally have a 30% promo next weekend which makes it $136. Anyone had luck with it? I am thinking I am going to trickle charge it overnight and will take it up there to have them test the battery.

    Their website says it meets the venting requirements. Hopefully OP provides feedback to see if it really does.

    There is a vent hole on the left side. I am going to install it today. It comes with a 75 month prorated warranty. Not bad and saved me $100 over the oem

    Awesome! I just bought my 06 Prius and I need to see how old the 12v battery is. I don't want it failing on me as I have to drive 150 miles a day for work.

    Yea I had Napa load test mine and they said it had 236 CCA and their monitor said replace battery. Not sure what the factory cold CCA are. I tested my battery at the jumpoints with a voltmeter and it showed about 12.5V but it has not started on me twice in the last week so I went ahead and got a new one.

    325'ish, I think.

    Yeah that's the thing. Especially if you test a freshly charged battery, the voltage reading will just give you false hope. Testing the CCA gives a much picture of how it's going to perform. And CCA lower than spec, it's time. 236 is toast.

    Pick up something like Solar BA9 and you can see for yourself, do the same test the store is doing.

    I got a chance to install the new NAPA battery and it fit great and had the vent hole. Quick ? as I was installing the negative and positive terminals back on the battery the socket wrencj slipped and touched metal and a spark flew up. The wiring harness was not connected at that point for the 3 plugs BTW. I finished the install and started the car and ran her around and it was great no check engine lights or anything. Did I do any damage of any kind?

    Likely you're ok. A compact box wrench is best for tightening the clamps. Keep it contained within the palm of your hand as much as possible. Do the positive terminal clamp tightening completely, then negative.
