OPEC+ is capitalizing on the panic. Oil prices are down 30+% since Thursday.

Yeah, the flu death count includes those that succumb to secondary infections too.

Not vitamin C, you want citricidal.

Capitalizing? That would be surge pricing. Instead, it looks more like a price war.

OPEC+ no longer exists. The Russians didn't want to cut production to support prices.
A price war has started, which would be the opposite of capitalizing.

Technically you're right. I was thinking that starting a price war to bankrupt the shale oil companies would be capitalizing on the viral pandemic.

The Saudis tried to bankrupt the shale companies in 2014. They did, but failed to understand both our bankruptcy laws and the resiliency of our oil industry's production. The companies reorganized under Chapter 11, shed most of their debt, and kept producing!

This time, the industry is also well covered on the financial hedge markets for the rest of this year.

Just got a blog from a doctor I respect about Covid-19. His qualifications are that he is an MD and has a masters degree in public health. I'm not providing his identification because his website already crashes when there is too much traffic.

I'll quote several important parts from his blog.

So, in the opinion of a MD with a master's degree in public health, the general reaction to COVID-19 is way overblown. It's about as dangerous as the common flu, a danger we have been coping with forever.

There have been only a little over 1500 people tested in the US. How does that compare to the number tested for the flu?

The danger in the US is that nobody really knows how bad this is because we are not really effectively looking. People panic over something unknown that looks very bad.

There are many opinions of many doctors, just pick the one you like.

If you ask the doctor that is working in a Italian hospital and is deciding which pacient is wort saving, just like in a war, then he will definitely not have the same opinion:
Coronavirus, medico di Bergamo: Dobbiamo scegliere chi curare e chi no, come in guerra

My body also says it is an hour earlier than the clock due to daylight savings time change.

That number is for those tested at the CDC, not state and local labs. I believe the local tests in my own county are up to a somewhat similar count. Still, it is an abysmally low number for a country of our size.

"‡ As of March 8, 2020 1,707 patients had been tested at CDC. This does not include testing being done at state and local public health laboratories, which began this week."

OK I thought that total was comprehensive since supposedly the states report their tests to the CDC. Still far less than one million though.

I have been resisting as the work was not ready, but it is in Public Beta now

Folding@home is a project to combat disease and to investigate drug performance by analyzing protein folding.

They have projects now to combat COVID-19.

So if you want to do something with your computer's graphics card to help discover treatment options, you can. (Later there may be projects for the CPU, but right now graphics cards newer than 2015 are the target audience.

(this is a 'hobby' for your computer, you are not really involved other than to pay the electric bill)

Goin' after the spike protein! Hot stuff.

As it is mentioned in that link. let me say more about ACE2. It is (more or less) a protein on your cell surfaces, and what spike likes. It is also the way that ACE2 inhibitors work - one type of anti-hypertension medicine. It has been suggested that people taking ACE2 inhibitors are more susceptible to COVID-19. This is consistent with old or hypertense folks getting sicker or deader.

A medical blog (JAMA or NEJM, I forgot which) suggested ACE2 inhibitor-takers might switch to other medicines until this cloud passes. Ask your doctor :)

There is a range of current reports of case numbers in USA. What other causes are there, besides cruise-ship counting and (few-hour) different reporting times?

    213 in WHO sitrep #49

    423 at CDC
    607 at Johns Hopkins

    ==

Total cases outside China in WHO sitreps can be subjected to short-term extrapolation*. Recognizing uncertainty of this approach, I mention two milestones.

Those daily new cases will exceed China's daily max (5019) on March 12 or 13.
Those daily new cases will exceed 10 thousand on March 20 or 21.

"or" depends on readers' location wrt international date line.
    extrapolation* is second-order polynomial.

My state just added an additional death this evening to the 3 listed earlier today, bringing our state total to 23.

I'm not seeing the argis.com map details for the U.S. at the moment to figure out if this bumps the U.S. total above 27.
