Nice. I think the rule of thumb on level roads with no wind is speed plus MPG equals 120. Drop the speed to 50 and get 70 MPG. Increase to 70 and get 50. That might be on Gen 3 rather than Gen 2, but it should be fairly close to that on Gen 2.

I browsed through my maintenance/travel book and my ratio is closer to 105 than 120. Around 80 when the roads haven't been particularly flat and there were quite a few signals and stop signs. This car has never achieved the kind of gas mileage some of you get but to me it's not a big deal. I'm sitting at 42.7 mpg lifetime, exactly the average for a 2008 Prius at fuelly.com. Mine is also the touring model with the little bit larger rims, probably costing me another mile per gallon.

I just drive and enjoy the car. :)

Yeah. Especially the signals that turn red when you're 20 feet too far away to make it though and you have to turn your gas into brake dust.

    Amen!!! :D

For some odd reason ... My car gets shitty mileage when other people drive it.

As a newbie to this site and a proud owner of a 2020 Prius Prime....I would like to throw in my two cents on gas mileage. I have been driving VW diesels ( bad word I know) since the 1990’s and was a high mileage “ freak” and was hypermiling way before it was the fashionable thing to do. My dealer was always amazed on the mpg that I was able to obtain. I remember one trip into WV from NY state where my round trip obtained 63 mpg.....and that was an accurate calculation. I was always coasting up to red lights and down every hill !
As the posts here on this topic, I was obsessed in fuel economy and kept my two Jetta wagons maintained to the t....especially filters, and tires / type and pressures. So turn the clock to 2018 ...I purchased my first hybrid a Toyota Camry...which was a great car, but it just didn’t quite make the mpg that I wanted. To give you my background..I work for a manufacturer of residential heating equipment, and I am the field technical support person and trainer covering 11 states from my home office in New York State. So I had to jump to my Prius to tweak out even better mpg when on my business trips...which typically I log 40,000 to 50,000 miles a year. My key here was to max my profits in expenses that the vehicle costs to drive vs what the company pays me ! The two things that all of you know, driving styles between my wife and I are totally different, affecting her mpg compared to my driving style. ( well covered in these posts) BUT being a highly technical “nerd”, I am obsessed in vehicle maintenance, and fortunately “ crank my own wenches” and I have a few BMW antique vehicles that I play with in my spare time.
I just want to say as in another thread on this site, “ sex or the Prius site”.....I can learn more here !
A great site....since I have dropped the VW diesel site (TDI) ...where I was a very active poster there, after the VW ( dieselgate” caper and buy- backs)
Thanks for the great people here....I have a lot to learn......

Welcome to Priuschat. The folks here always have great information and advice. I only imagine your 2020 Prime gets superior economy to all of us Gen 2 drivers. If it doesn't I'm never going to upgrade! :)

    Just a reminder....

Your "MPG" is NOT anything (number or graph) on the screen! It is by calculator: Miles Driven / Gallons Used (period).

So, I’ve been in lockdown in the UK and restricted to working from home for my own safety. Fortunately, I still have a job (IT Support in Education), and I am able to provide remote online support not only to staff and students who are now running classes online from home (using Google Classroom), but I’m also directly connected to my school network and carrying out very detailed long term maintenance on individual workstations I usually never had time for while on site during busy term time work days.

    But, I digress.

I’ve only driven 43 miles to the shops and scheduled weekly hospital appointments in the last 3 weeks.
Lockdown means the roads are empty - like there’s been a flipping Zombie Apocalypse - or Aliens just abducted the entire population of London.

p.s. Now’s a good time for apocalyptic movie directors to sneak out there and shoot as much footage as they can of the genuinely empty streets - for future projects!

Indeed, the only thing missing on some deserted roads is tumbleweed and that famous “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” theme in the background.

    However, back on topic.
Very, very few cars are on the roads in my neck of the woods, making the driving experience pretty good.
No, exceptionally good for London, and progress getting anywhere, oh so unimpeded.
Perhaps the most surprising thing was; the few cars on the road driving well below the speed limit and totally behaving themselves - as in adhering to the Highway Code! Impressive? Absolutely!
The weather got surprisingly warmer too, with daytime temperatures hitting up to 26c!

Anyhow, I was privileged to fill up my tank on the last day of my ring road commute to the office - as I drove home. That’s the fuel I’ve been using since. Ergo, I have a full tank.

Imagine my shock when I got home from my hospital appointment - which I admit to having used as an excuse to take the longest way home ......and discovered this reading on my MFD.

I wasn’t even consciously trying to hyper-mile but I guess I must have, through my very relaxed driving style - and possibly the route had something to do with it too.

Anyway, I’ve never gone 43 miles with 72.8mpg on the MFD before. I’m stunned. But I’m also realising that if the roads weren’t so congested everyday and I didn’t do so many jack-rabbit starts from the traffic lights in the morning, my MPG per tankful would be pretty impressive!

This is on an 11 year old 2nd Gen Prius TSpirit (Touring equivalent across the pond) with its original propulsion system - not modified in anyway. I’m glad I bought this vehicle!

Thought I’d share my lockdown MPG with everyone.

Take care y’all and stay safe!

Last two fillups, I averaged a little over 50mpg. COVID-19 has reduced highway miles drastically. As a result, I am driving more on local roads.

Welcome. I got rid of my last TDI in 2011, but I still post over on Fred's TDI, sometimes they need a little help. :p

Lockdown’s now virtually cancelled in the UK, and the roads are back to being chock-a-block with congested traffic.

However, got the readings below out of half a tank of fuel so far.

And these readings with a cheap replacement Catalytic Converter fitted, as I had my original stolen in November 2018.

I’m amazed that a 12 year old vehicle can still get such amazing fuel economy

Even allowing for Imperial gallons versus US gallons, that's outstanding. My wife gets almost that good (50 US/60 Imperial) economy on her 2007 without really trying. She drives mostly city (35-50 mph) and quite a few short trips.

    monkey.jpg Post # 280 I wrote:

On the highway during the Summer, 58mpg at 60mph. The included pic shows a 23 mile trip from one town to another, 7 miles at 50mph, the rest 40mph, with perhaps two miles 35mph.

A few months ago I read here how to drive "with no energy flow arrows". So I started to practice. Now I am an addicted monkey... :) The same 23 mile route NOW.

I'm impressed! Our 2007 and 2008 tends to get in the low 40's unless it's really cold, then more like 38, at least on the 2007. This is without trying to get good gas mileage with the way we drive.

Second fill-up since March something. 62.8 mpg again.

    2005 G2 w/ 158,000-ish miles.

I don't know how accurate my Gen 2 Prius that I just got will be, but I logged a whole year, just over 30,000miles, in my Avalon Hybrid and gave up doing it since the average on the dash was exactly the same as what I calculated. I had reset it only once, that is, the day I initially bought the car.
