I used it in every fill up for about 10,000mi. Don’t add more than 4oz per tank! I stopped because at the end I believe it was just not going to improve anymore, the injectors were as clean as they can be, maybe. It did improve my MPG slightly over that time. Also now I only use 91 octane fuel or higher because the engine feels smoother between transitions and has more power over very steep hills at high altitude.

Not really, but I was getting slight pinging with regular gas. It definitely “feels” a lot smother and powerful with 91.

I would like to add that I recommended MMO to my brother because his 1996 Suburban had a slight misfire and it actually helped, it was most likely a dirty injector.

NO. Not unless it is ethanol free.
The Prius engine has absolutely NO design element that would benefit from higher octane gas.
Nada. Zilch.

 

MMO is just light oil. It won't hurt anything.....probably.....but won't help either.
Extended use might contribute to carbon accumulation.

Your money would be better spent on a recommended dose of Techron every 5K miles or so.

And SeaFoam is just snake oil.
A jack of all trades and master on NONE.

 

The manual literally says 87 or higher. It all depends on driving conditions, fuel quality, altitude etc.

 

Higher than 87 is acceptable.
If there were some conditions where a higher octane would be desirable, don't you think they would SPECIFY that ??
Higher altitude requires LESS octane.
The engine is completely computer controlled do you can't really make it "work harder" by pressing on the accelerator.
A higher octane rating does not guarantee higher "fuel quality".

I repeat my statement that using higher octane fuel will NOT accomplish anything useful in these engines.
The two exceptions are: If the fuel is ethanol free, you should see a slight uptick in mileage.
If you have REALLY bad carbon deposits or some other engine malfunction that causes a ping or knocking, higher octane fuel might help cover that up.......but won't fix it.

 

Correct...Octane does not increase performance...actually it does just the opposite.. octane is a spark inhibitor.. gasoline explodes by 2 main methods: fire-from spark plugs and high compression (reason it is used in sport cars) and our little engines are far from high performance.

Gas is not supposed to "explode" inside of an engine.
It is supposed to burn at a controlled rate and NOT create an explosion.
That is precisely why a higher octane is needed to prevent an "explosion" in some circumstances.

 

If you want to clean your fuel injectors and fuel line system, I'd recommend BG 44K. I've had good results using it and there isn't anything to worry about.

 

If your just looking to clean out your fuel system....

If you have E15 around your area like we have here. Just run the fuel down to a quarter tank and fill up with E15 gasoline (15% ethanol). Or, fill up your tank, run a couple gallons down and throw in a gallon of E85. (If your curious, I've filled up from a half tank with E85 once - didn't even throw a code) lol

Your Prius C can run 15% ethanol - even says so on my C's gas cap. But any vehicle manufactured after 2000 can run it.

Also E15 is cheap - as in very cheap. Right now it's 15 cents cheaper than regular E10. Mileage difference between E15/E10 is about 1.5 - 2.0 mpg. So not enough to be any big deal. I've been running it for - well since I bought the car and I'm getting 50mpg on average.

Ethanol by itself is not a good fuel system cleaner.
And there are too many chances for a mistake trying to follow your advice.

 

E15 is printed on the gas cap that's it's acceptable fuel. As for the E85 at a couple gallons down - only mentioned it because I've done it with waaay more than a few gallons. Genuinely surprised it didn't throw a code.

But the E15 - been using it for years. In fact, I can't think of a gas station around me that doesn't sell it. Everyone here uses it because it's so much cheaper.

 

On YOURS it is. Pretty sure that ALL year models of Prius are NOT like that.
And the main point is that ethanol in any concentration is not a really good fuel system cleaner......unless maybe the problem really is water.

 

We're talking about the Prius C here in this thread. Not the regular Prius.
