If you get a chance, can you take a couple of pictures, please?

Pictures of what? Non-spare Prii have 2 pieces of formed foam, split down the middle. Spare-tire Prii have 2 side pieces, and the 3rd piece is circular, covering the spare.
I'll try to get some pics tomorrow, in daylight.

Does the foam serve any purpose in noise mitigation, or can we pull it out and create our own storage system without increasing the in-cabin noise?

Pure speculation, but I'd say yes, the combination of the weight of the spare bolted down on the naked stamped steel of the trunk floor, which has factory installed strips of dampening material, combined with the foam, probably has some effect.
How much? Probably best for you to do your own test.

The foam also supports any cargo placed in the area.

Seems to me a solution could be engineered (at home) to secure the equipment, and to give more storage space, while still holding up the cargo floor. The ideal material for this would be aluminum - sadly, all I have is steel welding equipment.

I'm about to give up. :) anyone find a solution that does not involve cutting up the 2 board oem prices or paying 400 for new foam?
